I have a leaking/failing rear driver side shock. Truck is 2018 off-road with 7500 miles. Noticed the shock looked really damp and dirty and now seeing spots on the driveway under the shock. Definitely is dripping. Just bad luck or is this a “thing”. Gonna have it looked at obvi but not sure if I should go ASAP or wait until the next scheduled service.

If you are close to the Dealer then stop by and show them as they will probably have to order a new shock.

It happens but unusual. My billies went to 160k on my 1st gen, 120k on my 2nd gen, and have taken a lot of abuse on my 3rd gen but shit happens should be covered free under warranty just go get a new one, it can probably wait a few thousand miles until your next service but I'd personally get it done soon as you have time to drop it off so it doesn't effect tire wear.

Did you happen to spend some time on a washboard road??

It has seen a few, but nothing too excessive, high speed, or long distance.

That's the most common way to break them. They get hot and the seals fail. But it could just be a bad one from the factory so no big deal. The dealer will slap another one on there real quick.

while not common I have seen a post or two about it. Should be no-brainer warranty claim unless you were jumping or pre-running. wouldnt worry too much about it again. and if it does happen then that is just a sign you need to lift it

same one on my 16 leaked about two weeks after i bought it. worst part, one trip to the dealer, 35miles away, so they could eye ball it then they had to order it an a second trip back to get it installed.

    A few minor things...
7500 miles is under warranty if you haven't modified the suspension or they can prove its been abused.

I'd stop in immediately and have them assess and replace under warranty.

Driving with blown shocks can be/is dangerous. Sooner is better than later.

This is likely warranty, but I would use it as an excuse to upgrade to 5100s. The OEM Billsteins leave a lot to be desired, but the 5100s are really great and not too much money.

Just to update, finally got it in and replaced under warranty. I had them look at it at my last scheduled service and they verified it was leaking and needed replaced, and then they had to order and reschedule the work. Took about an hour.

Bilsteins 5100s on the top setting, 4runner Gray TRD Pro Sema wheels, 285/70/17 Toyo AT3s, Sumo Bump stops, TRD exhaust, ECGS Clamshell bushing, 1/4 shim for the lean and one inch rear block, OEM Pro grill and garnish OEM TRD Skid plate, TRD CAI, Demon Brackets, Rigid Industries Pro fog lights, OEM Trail Rails sidebars, Diode Dynamics LED SL1 high and low beam lights, OEM Roof racks, Clazzio leather heated seats, Remote Start, TRD Pro shift knob, tinted windows, Rockford Fosgate 4 channel amp for the headunit and sub and amp combo, OEM Puddle lights, OEM tailgate lock, OEM bed mat, LED interior lights, OEM blackout kit for letters, JLT catch can, upgraded 27F toyota True Start battery, Vleds led tail light kit with Pro tail lights, OEM Rave4 side mirrors with convex spotters, just to name a few mods.
I'm happy to a lifetime warranty on my 5100s. Bilstein must also think they are garbage to offer a lifetime warranty on such a bad product that sells its ass off. I love my 5100s and very happy with them.
