Here's the Fox Sparrow i was telling you guys about. I was walking along, heard the high-pitched seeeep call, stopped, waited, he popped out and sat on that branch for 5 minutes. I even moved to get a better shot through the sticks and he didn't move. This photo is straight off the camera, no cropping. I had to lean back a little so there was enough room between us for the lens to focus (min distance is 3.5m).

What's the difference between the Fox Sparrow and the House Sparrow ?

Wow! I can only imagine the feather detail at full resolution if that's not a crop!

That's crazy, but awesome! There are a number of groups that do raptor counts all over the place. That's actually how we first realized that DDT was bad for raptors, because the raptor counters in the Appalachians noticed declining numbers of Eagles. One of my professors from a raptor biology course leads a raptor count in the Marin headlands where raptors stop to rise on a thermal before crossing the bay opening. There's a huuuuge count in Vera Cruz, Mexico. They just look up and count raptors by the thousands (i.e. not there's one raptor, two raptors, three raptors... but there's 10,000 raptors, there's another 10,000 raptors, another...).

Fox sparrows have those little chevrons on their breast and have a solid brown back and head. House Sparrows have that black chin and throat patch and a white breast and belly with a kind of mottled back. They're actually in different families, House Sparrows are a non-native old world sparrow (Passeridae) while Fox Sparrows are in the native Sparrow family (Emberizidae)

Ben posted a House Sparrow a while back:

Thanks! I'm going to go through my other photos right now, I was just so amazed with that one that I had to get it up asap.
Yep, Merlin. Just checked whatbird, too. In the above shot he's adorable!
Nice job going off of size!

Yep! And the only one I ended up cropping is the Robin in the tree photo. I didn't post that one here, it's in my Birds set on flickr, though. I only edited the lighting a little on these, I may have overdone it, though. Feel free to critique that. I didn't touch the sharpening or noise reduction.

Edit: whoops, I guess the sharpening tool stays loaded to your last settings even after you close LR so they're sharpened a bit...I think they're a bit too sharp, so I may undo that... Gotta board a plane now, though.

I just started doing a little birding last year in March. I didn't go out of my way too much, but I had fun looking for new birds here and there.

This photo is of my bird feeder feeder......

This was the highlight of the 47 species I saw in my first year, a Cedar Waxwing.

Red tailed hawk looks like to me, probably a passage bird

Easiest way to ID a harrier is the big white spot on their rump and the base of their tail feathers

Looks like Haggard Merlin, I'm guessing its a tiercel by size

That was pretty cool. Great way to control the bird population too.

Ya, you're probably right. We seem to have a lot of these guys around. I had recognized them as juvinile reds over the years, but I've started questioning myself lately. Damn old age...

Oh OK, they are all over here and they are such a pain in the ass when we go to fly the falcons... same thing as Short Eared Owls....

That was a pretty interesting bit of news that they used an eagle for abatement, we know quite a few other falconers that fly their falcon at airports and at vineyards for a career and get paid well.... I feel pretty lucky to go out with my dad and his buddies to fly the birds on wild game

What do you mean by passage bird, Haggard Merlin, and tiercel? I've never heard those terms before.

You're a falconer!? Or your dad? Either way, that's crazy! I thought about working to become a falconer but it's a looot of work and is pretty much your entire life.

My wife's company hires a guy with a lab to come by the facility 2 times a day and let his dog run the geese off of the small ponds. Scientists don't like goose crap on the sidewalks...

Sorry, passage= first year bird before they change into adult plummage, and falcons have blue beak and feet their first year....
    Tiercel is a male bird....

I would have a bird, but my life is too unexpectable.... it is a lot of work but it helps if you get a good sponsor to work through your apprenticeship... my dad is flying a 2nd season tiercel gyr/peregrine hybrid.
