Wasn't a barn owl, was darker colored. Based on size (guessing 30 to 36 wingspan as it flew across teh road), location (NW WY) and habitat (forest, marsh) either great grey, great horned, long eared or maybe barred. Wish I could have gotten a better look or heard something to help ID it....

oh, well, back to Galapagos pics!

Back to the timeline, after Cerro Dragon we went to Puerto Ayora for the night. The next day we checked out the Charles Darwin Research Center and a ranch in the highlands with wild Giant Tortoises.

Apparently the Galápagos Mockingbirds vary slightly between islands with slightly different facial patterns.

Overnight we went from Santa Cruz Island to Floreana Island. In the morning we visited Post Office Bay, named after a communal post barrel established in the 1600's (I think? Not sure about the date, but Pirate times) where you would leave post and another ship would pick it up to carry it on to the destination. Today it works the same way, but with tourists. We picked up a few to take back to California. :D

That afternoon we went and snorkeled at Devil's Crown. Amaaaazing snorkeling, but no new bird photos!

Right before sunset we did a short little hike on the island. More flamingos and finches and yellow warblers! Oh and an Ani, too!

Then we went over to Isla Española. The hike went along Punta Suárez and was phenomenal!

That evening we boated up to San Cristobal Island and anchored for our last night. The last day we went up to León Dormido/Kicker Rock to snorkel early in the morning.

And then we went to the interpretive center in the town on San Cristobal. Not too much bird activity. Only got this guy on the camera.

And then we headed back to the mainland, finishing our cruise on the Galápagos!

After the Galápagos we did a trip around mainland Ecuador, too. Started with a day trip to Baños, then a day trip to Salinas de Guaranda, and then we headed down through Puyo to Tena in the Amazon. We didn't really see too many birds on the first two days, but did spot a new hummingbird, a Tourmaline Sunangel, in Baños and a Shining Sunbeam in Salinas! I only had a short lens with me, so no good photo of either of those.

On the way to Tena we got some good stuff, though!

Two hummingbirds I can't ID! The only ones that look right don't occur where I saw them :frusty:

    Edit: ID'd them!

So I'm in my kitchen making blueberry muffins and notice a bird land on the utility pole as I glance out the window. Seems alittle bigger than my usual crowd so I grab my camera (binoculars are in the car), zoom in and take a few shots. Look at the photos and its a damn kestrel holding a dead bird in its feet!_MG_3804.jpg _MG_3793.jpg
He's still out there enjoying his breakfast...can I interest anyone in a muffin?

    I'll take a muffin!

They usually take their meals to a high spot to eat. Kinda gross to see-I have a couple of those shots too.

I see a lot of them when I'm out exploring - never seen one in the middle of town before though! He was out there for almost an hour.

Haha, nice! I've had that happen a few times before where a bird looked weird and it ended up just having some prey.

Just uploaded a ton of photos but it's way past my bedtime so I'll post them tomorrow.
One of the more exciting moments, though, as a teaser... This was shot at 18mm and wasn't cropped in. So close to the hummingbirds!
