There's a certain amount of truth to the value of PMs when SHTF. Yes, they will be valuable. But the question is, can you use them in place of barter or trade. I think the answer is going to be mixed.

As far as getting somewhere that hasn't collapsed? If you haven't done that when SHTF, it's probably not happening.

And for those who want to talk about collapse, look what happened world wide during the whole banking thing. The world economy is very dependent on US economy and success of the US banking system. If the US SHTF, you are going to see a worldwide problem.

It could cure the infection caused by a hangnail but obviously it wouldn't cure the lack of brainpower that created the lack of proper hygiene in the first place.

    It usually gives me indigestion.

Ok. I do agree, XXXX, that vodka will have its uses as you mention, but only if you stockpile it.

My point is that when the USD becomes worthless, and SHTF, gold will still be able to be used as currency, even here. Nobody really knows how viable it will be to use gold as currency though. When the dollar looses it's value, inflation will skyrocket, so will the value of gold, other PM, as well as necessary commodities for survival.

Of course only having gold and relying on that is not wise. It is wise to have a diverse plan such as stockpiling gold, food, water, ammo, medical supplies, vodka, etc. Yes I agree if you have skills and tools to use those skills, that will be invaluable. It is also wise to gather a community that can be self suffient and rely on barter/trade to survive.

There is a wide spectrum of what a SHTF can look like. I dont really see PMs as something to barter with, I see them as a store of value, so that when things get back to normal you didnt lose your entire net worth. Of course theres the chance where you do have them and they allow you to get to a safe place somehow because the person you are giving them to already has a ton of preparations in place so they are willing to accept metals, or if its to flee the country or something like that.

If you really do anticipate a bad SHTF or collapse, then you should first invest heavily into preparations and sustainable living before thinking about PMs, then invest any leftover FRNs after you are ready to take on a year or more of no power, no water, no gas etc.

Ya... Atlanta was paralyzed from 2" of snow.

Los Angeles is paralyzed on Friday afternoon of a holiday weekend.

There's not going to be any getting anywhere.
