So true. MTBE might have been showing up in water, now the effects of ethanol show up in the landfill. It trashes the carbs on small engines, most of which have no parts availability - off to the landfill they go. All the cost and environmental impact to build a whole new engine.

Biodiesel / FAME is terrible too. They failed to acknowledge fuel storage applications like standby generators. What was once 10+ years of stable diesel storage is now a year or two with biodiesel present. All they had to do was mix that same bio-oil into the petroleum up front and everything would have been a fine.

When I used to run a motorcycle dyno for a living I wanted to know just this.
I got gas from several stations in my area and made dyno runs, no real differences in any of them, HOWEVER there is no way to test the QUALITY/CONSISTENCY of pump gas from batch to batch.
Overall pump gas is not all that different from mom and pop to big name...HOWEVER mom and pop stores are less likely to inspect their equipment or do the water/contamination testing in their holding tanks than say a bigger name vendor would.

Now on my drag bike I use race gas for its consistency and quality, meaning from batch to batch you can rely on every batch being the same which in bracket racing everything needs to be the same as much as possible to be accurate in your run.

If you don’t hear pre-detonation you’re good to go.

Basically the “rattle” or “knock” sound. If you don’t hear it then 87 is good.

Unless your engine is really messed up, I doubt you ever will. Modern engines have such sensitive knock sensors they will start pulling timing even at the slightest hint of it.

'Top Tier' is for the most part a marketing scam, and a good excuse for dealers to try and hide behind on fuel related warranties (aka you didn't use Top Tier did you?)

The thing to be cautious of is stations that don't have a high rate of fuel turn over and the in ground systems are old. There is more risk of contaminants there. But if your local Costco, wawa, racetrack, you name it is a busy place, you're risk level is low.

Biodiesel is another example of uneducated folks (this time celebrities like Begley) using a position of trust (some folks are like rats following the pied piper) to push their personal agendas.
Like so many things leave it to educated and experienced professionals and you’ll have a much better outcome. Or as one friend put it, both podiatrists and neuro surgeons are MD’s. Which one do you want removing a tumor from your brain?

Not worth the savings for me.

Always run top tier and keep up with maintenance intervals. Never had any fuel or emissions system issues in any of my vehicles. I live on an island, all of the fuel is shipped here in bulk. The misconception is that "it's all the same, it comes in the same barge". Yeah the base stock is the same, and it's all held in two large distribution centers. The difference is in the additives, transport and storage after the fact.

There's almost no price difference here anyway, maybe 1 or 2 cents per litre but often no difference at all.

Correct, now If I plan on going some area that may not have Shell premium (or any other major brand for that matter...it's the ethanol that I'm most concerned about...most top brands have a pretty balanced additives) I carry some kind of additive/injector cleaner around.

I was recently told their adding biofuel to our heating oil. When i had my furnace cleaned the other day our furnace guy said these furnaces are getting dirtier now due to the heating oil suppliers adding biofuel to it....said its terrible making more work for them.

Probably best to buy from the same station that the dealership uses when they fill the tank before you take delivery of your vehicle.

Yes, if the nearest station is good enough for the dealership, the nearest station is good enough for me.

Right? but if they ever tried to deny warranty work or make a stink about the gas you use. You can tell them that's its same gas from the same place they filled it at when they sold it to you.

Wawa was just down the street from the dealership so I'd bet they went there with mine.
