    1. the black TACOMA on tailgate is clearly an insert. Anyone removed the letter inserts successfully?

    2. the other black emblems, are they black over chrome? or just black parts? They seem a lil more bulky than the chrome versions so I'm asking. I prefer Chrome but I might buy a truck with black already installed.

My black badging is a plastic overlay that stuck on top of the OEM chrome badging. Hasn’t budged once in 5 years since putting it on.

The black emblem overlays do look a bit chunky. I replaced my black overlay emblems with true black emblems. Looks much better with the black emblems from Amazon.

The black emblems actually are available in two modes, overlays and complete black emblems. The overlays, literally fit right over the existing chrome badges that came with the vehicle. They come with peel off tape on the backside that you then just stick the overlay over the existing badge. While that is supposed to be good enough, I also put some gorilla glue onto my badges, before I then stuck the overlay on. It has been almost 6 years with no problems and nobody would ever know that it is an overlay. Now, having written all this, the other mode is a complete black emblem or badge. You would remove the original chrome badge and replace it with the complete black badge/emblem. I actually have a set of the complete black badge that I got, but I decided I did not want to remove the original badge to install it, so I just ordered overlays which I have been using quite well. My truck actually came with the rear tailgate black lettering inserts already installed as an option. I could have obviously done it myself, but at that point, I was just happy to get the truck I wanted and that was the only thing already on it that I was planning on adding later, so I wasn't bothered. I personally recommend the overlays as they are just easier to install, although neither is really difficult.

I put the Black Tacoma inserts on in 2019 and they are still there. I have removed the black 4x4 emblem on the tailgate using the hair dryer fishing line method successfully.

Haven't tried removing my vinyl inserts. Went on easy, and I'll assume they'll come off easy. Been great after 8 years so far.

Maybe I am not asking this correctly.

Has anyone successfully removed the black overlays from the chrome badges, and kept the chrome on the truck?

It would probably be easier to remove the whole badge and replace with chrome.

I sure someone has but I don’t know of anyone IMO the blacked out badges look far better than chrome.

Yes, i agree with this comment as to I don't know either, why anyone would WANT to remove the black overlays for CHROME! Yuck!

When I put on my vinyl overlays, before I took the backing tape off, I actually set an emblem over the existing chrome badge, because I did not want any chrome showing, so I wanted to make sure it would fit tightly enough to cover the chrome. It did, so I then went ahead and installed it. I know it is one's opinion, but for me, covering all the chrome badges, and in my case, eliminating all chrome from the truck, was the best thing I did, especially with my blackened out LED headlights! They have clear lenses because of some state laws against blackout lenses, but the chrome parts that would normally be there are blacked out. They made a world of difference, as well as when I also replaced the turn signals on the outside mirrors. They of course, came with chrome trim around the light portion, but getting the blackout version is also totally fantastic. It looks way better, and switching to the LED signals totally made the light SO much brighter!

Mine had the blackout overlays on when I bought it. The A letters don't have the center cutout but it's not a big deal to me., I blacked out as much of the interior with overlays also.

Yeah that's true about the "A" letters not having the center cutout. But as you mentioned, it isn't a big deal to me either, and in fact, one has to look really close to even notice it!

I used black overlays on my truck. If the truck you are looking at has overlays, they are most likely held on with a version of 3M double sided tape. Unless whoever installed them wanted to mess with emblem adhesive. If I were to remove mine, I wouldn’t hesitate to use very mild heat and light pressure to remove the overlays. Being very cautious, I wouldn’t worry about the heat affecting the factory chrome emblems adhesive.

My overlays and tailgate inserts have been installed two years in March with 0 issues.

    They look awesome IMO.
