my female chocolate lab does that too! i am constantly greeted by licks every time i get out of the truck. not just a couple at the hands, she does not stop until you get on to her. and she is constantly licking herself and any little thing she finds or drags up. idk why they do that? she's not dumb at all like you say yours is. she knows her name and her commands, stops when you say to, and is probably the smartest dog i know. it's weird that mine and yours are both female chocolate labs and lick like that. maybe they are just happy to see us, lol.

that's great man. a dog is a great companion. the thing that worked for us was the pee pads. the ones that are made of like a diaper type material. i know, you can laugh, and i did and was skeptical at first too, but they work. you just have to keep taking the dog back to the pad and sit them on it every time they need to go. every time they are about to squat, just take them to the pad. after a few days (when i was about frustrated and ready to give up), my two, six week old puppies were sniffing around like they had to go...and then went to the pads to go. it's crazy, but they get the idea and eventually do it. ideally, once they have it figured out, you'll move the pads outside. because even if they are going on the pads, you'll still have that lingering smell of piss or dog crap in the house. after moving them outside they will start letting you know they need to go out; they will just scratch at the door/sniff at it/bark/etc at the door. eventually you stop using the pads and they will just go in the yard, all you gotta do is open the door.

i had never had an indoor dog before, they had all been outside dogs. but the first time we tried this, it worked. so it's worth a try if i can do it. it will save you from cleaning up a lot of dog crap and piss off the floor.

side note: every lab i've had, regardless of color, was notorious for loving to chew up anything and everything. so prepare for that and try to find some kind of training for that if you can.

^^^ Yeah shes already destroyed a tennis ball and got her hands on a plastic bag which isnt good at all. I just spent the last 20 mins "puppyizing" my house. Ive heard the pads work well before...I might get them from petsmart tomorrow and try em out.

Yep, every lab or lab mix I've had loves to tear stuff up. My back porch is covered in random things that my 3yr old chocolate lab and 1.5yr old weimaraner drag up: balls, random toys, two squirrels, random bones, a turtle shell, and so much other junk. Idk where they find it all. I kicked it all off the other morning and it was all back again when I got back in the afternoon. Lol. That's a habit you'll want to break if you are going to hunt with her. You don't want her tearing up your kill. Definitely put away anything in harm's reach, haha. They pads are worth a try for one box or so; better than mopping the floors. Also, if you have access to a pond or lake, she will love that! My lab loves the water and swims about every day of the year in our lake. She takes several dips a day in the summer to cool off and I've even saw her breaking through the ice in January and February just to take a swim.

When my lab was that old I trained her to use a litter box. Just like the TW member that mentioned the piss pads, I used the same technique with a litter box. Once she got bigger, I moved to crate training. It's been a constant training. The one downfall I've noticed with the litterbox/piss pad technique is once I move the box outside, she continued to go where I previously had the box. She just got used to going in the area, then I changed it on her, so she had to be re-trained for the new area. Crate training has been the best, because they learn to hold it in, and when you let them out you train them to follow you to the spot you want them to do business.

Labs are smart dogs and it'll take them about a week or two to figure out what you want them to do. After that its persistence. Dogs like to be on a schedule, so if you can make one for your dog, she'll be happy as hell!

I have had all 3. The chocolate was dumb as a bag of rocks. The black was an amazing dog. Smart and loyal. Broke my heart when we had to put her down. I have a yellow lab right now and she's a damn cool dog. She's smart but super hyper.

I've seen all of them and they all can be very hyper. My black lab, Zack, was unusually calm as a puppy as well as the rest of his life. He was the coolest, and smart as whip. He was a pure bred AKC registered box head lab. He weighed 122lbs and wasn't fat, just that big. I lost him about a month ago. One of the worst days of my life. He really was my best friend.

I don't think you'll can go wrong with any lab. Just be prepared to get way too attached.

Aww man, I'm sorry for your loss, Zack is loved & remembered bro', beautiful puppy. I'm new to Labs but not to hyper, introverted dogs, I put Lexy my Weimaraner of 13 years down 2 years ago due to cancer & yeah I still have a hole in my heart. Finally, I was emotionally able to get another puppy & Kacy my 3 month old black lab is helping to fill that void.

She is def. a character, she too is heavily papered on both sides.. It's going to be a fun ride with her I think.....;)

Thanks dude. Zack went out from liver cancer, but it was pretty sudden. It'll probably be little while before I get another one. I still get choked up when I look at that picture. Stupid how we get so attached to them.

Both are fine water dogs and even pretty good upland dogs as well. As pups they are a little nutz. They calm down and work out very well with proper training. Get your favorite color. I like Black (oldschool)

Starting a pup is always fun.

I always crate train. And if you have a large crate you may need to make it smaller by using a plywood divider. Don't want them thinking "wow bed and food and room for the bathroom in here". Never had any problems house breaking.

There are a lot of books and videos on gun dog training. Look for some on Ebay, sometimes at very good prices.
Just don't over do it on retrieving, you can turn them off from it. Start playing in puddles and work up to bigger water as she grows.

I have two Labs. I picked the litter that I wanted and didn't really worry about the color until I pick her up. I choose yellow because it's easy to find ticks on yellow. Great dogs.

    Have fun....

I've had labs of all colors my favorite had to been one of the yellow labs. They're great dogs for families, hunting and just as buddy dogs. Do your research on the breeder before you get your puppy. We had one that we had to put down after 4 year's because he had hip problems.
