Toyota uses overlays. We even purchased OEM ones for our 4Runner.

Yes, they're all just overlays. I had to convince my significant other of this when we we got her overlays so I took her to the dealership and we looked at the ones on the lot and even talked to the sales personnel.

Also, if you hit "quote" in the bottom corner, the person you're responding to will get a notification.

Thx for reply, and that must mean they "overlay", the door + the tailgate embossed ?

Any of the emblems that are blacked out are overlays. As for the embossed "Tacoma" on the tailgate, those are inlays. Not sure but I don't think there's an OEM for the inlays. I believe those are all aftermarket.

OEM i dont believe so, but some may consider a dealer option to be similar. I do think dealers do this too. but for like $30 you can get the tailgate inlay and emblem overlay aftermarket.

Blackout emblems is just the emblems on the side and rear. "Tailgate blackout insert" is an additional purchase from the dealer for like $100(?) (where they fill in the large tacoma lettering with inserts). As others have said, you can get aftermarket which looks the exact same for ~$30

Correct. The embossed inlays for my tailgate are aluminum and look great. Was hoping to get the same for the chrome ones but I'll see how the overlays look.

This is somewhat funny. I actually ordered and have a complete set of complete replacement black badges, meaning that I have two TACOMA badges and one V6 badge. I would have to look to see if it also came with a 4X4 badge, but I do have the complete set. When I ordered it, I had the intention of removing the OEM chrome ones and then replacing them with the solid black ones, but just didn't get around to it. Then a few months ago, I came across someone on Ebay who was selling the overlay set of around $20, so I immediately ordered it as installing that is MUCH EASIER and as others have mentioned, unless you look closely, you cannot tell the difference. Now, that having been said, there IS a difference, and it is in the middle of the letters "A". They are solid in the top part of the "A" instead of being open, as in the chrome and complete solid black replacement ones. But unless you look closely, you cannot tell the difference, and unlike what someone else here said, I cannot see a difference around the edges on mine. And if one goes to the dealer and asked for blackout trim, they will be overlays. I will certainly consider selling my complete kit if someone wants to message me. I will then take a picture of what I have and we can go from there.

I see. Yeah the overlays are what you see on the majority of trucks. Nothing super special about them other than maybe the quality of plastic and adhesive.

Yes, as you noted, the tailgate letters can be either adhesive "stickers" or actual plastic or even metal raised letters. That is what I got on my tacoma from the Factory, as they are raised black letters in the tailgate. I don't know if they are plastic or metal, but I actually think they are metal. I would NOT go with adhesive stickers, but that is just me. They probably look ok, but I just like the aesthetics of the nice raised letters.

I don't mind the stickers, but that's me. I had them on my Mustang. To me it kind of accentuates the embossed letters but I definitely get what you're saying.

I THINK the new NightShade Tacoma comes with black badges. That might be an option for those seeking OEM black badges that are not overlays

Aluminum. I have them. That's why I wanted the same raised aluminum to replace the stock chrome ones.

So I pulled the pinstripes off, waiting for blackouts to show up, but I tried rubbing alcohol to remove the residue from the pinsripes and that isn't working. I have paint thinner but worried about it stripping clear coat.

What's the best way to get the glue goo off my truck?!

I used clay bar and hand wax for all of the emblem goo. Worked well

I guess a clay bar it is, thanks!

I used Goof Off. It’s safe for the clearcoat, but I need to go back over those areas with a clearcoat polish now, to removed some extremely fine scratches from all the rubbing with a rag that I guess wasn’t clearcoat safe.

Also, I removed my adhesive this year from a 2014 magnetic gray truck. In the right light I can see the paint slightly faded everywhere except under the stickers I removed.
