    Hey everyone,

There might already be a thread for this I didnt do the most thorough searching but i was wonder what peoples opinions were
on blacking out the rear bumper and what you would have to do to actually do it right.

Also this is my first post on TW so go easy on me. Have been a part of other forums but just got my first tacoma so im trying
to learn as much as I can with all your guy's help.

Paint is incredibly hard to get to stick to chrome.. scuff the hell out of it and primer it good. Goodluck though!

I dont suggest painting chrome. Best option is to get a paintable bumber.. but if funds dont allow it.. grind the piss out of it(if youre using bedliner, grind marks shouldnt be an issue as it SHOULD fill them in), heavy build primer, Bedliner or paint.. if youre painting it you cant use a grinder and grinding disk.. your best bet is 320 on a DA Sander. Paint does not hide imperfections, it MAGNIFIES them.

I bought a black bumper from dealer and changed out. Going to colormatch with truck color. About $175.00

And is your truck black? if not, just buy the black 'paintable' bumber and leave it the way it comes. this is what comes factory on the trucks that come w.o painted or chrome bumbers. but if your truck is black, id suggest buying it and if you cant afford to get it painted right away, save up.. the unpainted bumber still looks good on a black truck if its not colormatched.

...spray painted my chrome bumper flat black awhile ago and it still looks good. Didn't do any major sanding. Just made sure it was clean, sprayed about 2 coats of primer and 3 coats of flat black. So far its fine..beside it being dirty from not washing it.

yeah I was considering just buying the paintable bumper and leaving it since I've got the BSP paint going so it wouldnt look that bad and later on could have it color matched if I really wanted to.

Hey RLDTACO I havnt looked into it to much but how much does that black bumper from the dealer usually run?

Dealer couldn't order colormatched bumper, so I ordered base black bumper and will have it painted. The finish on the black bumper looks great by itself.

I did this same thing, bought a new unpainted bumper for about $175, had it color-matched at a shop, about $200, then sold my original chrome bumper locally for $225. So after all was said and done, cost about $150. If you have some paint skills to color match the black bumper yourself, could actually come out a few bucks ahead.

I'm not good at painting so a shop that does work for dealer is going to paint it. They want $200 to finish up. I plan to sell my chrome bumper when its all done.

I wrapped mine with flat black vinyl. Didn't want to mess with the paint. I've only had it on the bumper for a few months so we'll see how it holds up.

My girlfriend use to work for ppg automotive and she said that you could try sanding it but eventually the paint will flake off. You might get a couple of years out of it but it wont be permanent. She said the best thing to do is strip the bumper, prime and paint if your looking for a long lasting finish. Good luck with whatever route you take!

I wrapped mine in vinyl too, has been on for about 6 or 7 months. No problems yet. Mine only cost me about 7 or 8 bucks though. 60 is pretty pricey
