After a week of ownership, mine did the same thing on a completely stock 2017 TRD Sport. My dealership told me to wash the car. I waited for a day that wasn't 20 below and did just that. Still won't work. So they can't and shouldn't be blaming the OP for any aftermarket upgrades when the stupid system won't work on a unit with no such upgrades.

EDIT: Bought mine in the last week of December 2018. Slightly used Canadian model that came with the Platinum Warranty Package.

To repair the BSM? I heard it’s like a grand for a new censor and calibration plus install, I’d rather get the extended warranty and cover all of it.

The warranty is negotiable from the dealer. And varies on mileage/years. Getting a Toyota Platinum Extended warranty (don’t go aftermarket imho), I’ve seen guys spending in the neighborhood of $1500-$2000.

Very disappointed in Toyota Canada and I have been a loyal Toyota fan for many years. I have a 2016 Tacoma whose Blind Spot Monitoring system just stopped working after the big freeze we just had in Toronto. I spoke to a dealer and he said that he has seen this before and its most likely when ice and snow get in the bumper where the sensor is located it pushes the sensor 5% out of alignment and it stops working. He told me to call Toyota Canada (TC). TC says it is an "environmental' problem and will not assist in paying the $625 checking and realignment fee at the dealer for fixing the design flaw that allow the sensor to be pushed out of alignment. Come on Toyota you built your reputation by being better, show us you can still be. Sounds like you have it better in the States at least they will cover it under warranty or recall.

When I had BSM issues on my 2016 they eventually cleared up on their own, after a thorough cleaning. I sure hope the sensor hardware and error handling software are better with 2018+ models with TSS, let alone if/when we have autonomous vehicles.

I have the same problem. Only, now, even the button inside the cab of the truck doesn't turn on anymore when I press it (no warning, no nothing - like its disconnected). I am bringing my truck in this Thursday and am already preparing for them to BS me on this. But then, who knows, maybe I'll be lucky? I've only owned the truck for a month and the BSM stopped working after week 2. lol

I want to begin by saying that I absolutely LOVE my Tacoma. But Toyota can kiss my ass. Having purchased my truck in December 2018, the money they want to charge me (in and around $650+tax) to fix the system will be spent on a new RCI metal bumper instead (in future). I wanted an Inferno Tacoma with moonroof. Because I bought slightly used, I ended up with the upgraded tech package which sounds great on paper, but apparently, not even the platinum extended warranty (purchased by the previous owner and transferred to me when I bought the truck) will cover the cost of making the truck's Blind Spot Monitor System work again. The guys at the stealership more or less confessed that the system is easy to knock out of alignment for any reason (e.g. weather, potholes - which there is plenty of in my neck of the woods, etc.) that frankly, I don't get why they even bother putting it on their vehicles in the first place. Keep in mind that even the button for the BSM and notification system on the console no longer operates! At the end of the day, I am still happy with my purchase. But it's a pick-up, not a Ferarri. I never wanted or needed these silly gadgets that clearly are more headache some (financially) than they are worth.

On another note, I did get some goodies added today including the OEM roof rack and bed mat. I will also be receiving my RCI Overland Rack next week from the US of A; just in time before I go and pick up my RTT at the end of the month. I don't (and won't) call it a build, just accessories for me and the family to make the most out of this otherwise great truck! Best of luck to everyone with their BSM system!!

Just picked up a used 2016 Trd sport with 36,000 km . bsm doesn't work , just gives me an error when I try to turn it on .I was blinded by the fact they found a low mileage manual transmission truck which I've been searching for 2 years , they are like unicorns here . But everything else was mint Luckily the finance guy talked me into a 36 month extended bumper to bumper warranty. They wanted $1495 , got him to $895 . I've never taken the extended warranty on anything but glad I did now . Will let you know what they find out at my next oil change . Problem is that will probably be 6 months from now , as I probably will never turn the bsm on so it doesn't really bother me

My BSM went out, five days ago. I turned it off wash the truck, and turned it back on but it still said on available. A couple of days go by, and this morning I wiggled the unit on the left side of my bumper… And voila! BSM is working again.I guess that's the four hour recalibration that the dealer needs to do with specialized equipment…

Call TC back and tell them you want the case re-opened.
It is not an "environmental issue" . As you stated it is a design issue.
Snow and Ice in Canada an the Northern USA is a NORMAL environmental occurrence.
Ask TC to put in writing that they will not honor their warranty because the truck was exposed to normal environmental conditions.

If they want to get feisty about that argument remind him/her about Toyota having to recall the frames because of "Environmental conditions" too, that their DESIGN failures do not get them off the hook for warranty claims. If we stick to our guns on this Toyota will re-visit the design.

The location of the BSM of these trucks is stupid. Once it warms up I'm going to crawl under the trucks and see if I can put something to block crap from the rear tires getting up into the BSM area.

    If it's under warranty it's covered 36 months 36000 miles don't pay a penny

Mine just randomly stopped working with a recent snow storm, of course I just hit 40K so the dealer wants $300 to fix, "this is an extremely well know problem with the Tacoma", their words not mine yet I'm still out $300 and 3 hours to "calibrate it".... I feel like there is an easier fix out there. They also tried to tell me my lift and how much I tow messes with it, I have never towed anything with it... I love this truck but Toyota consistently letting their customers down, is really getting old.
