I'm trying to find the physical locations and major components associated with the blind spot monitor system in my 2016. I know where the sensors are and the indicator in the mirror, obviously. I assume there is a computer or some sort of control system. The dealer I bought my truck from made an agreement to repair the system and they said they have the part needed to fix it but they won't tell me what it is or anything about it. As it sits the system will not even turn on. The sales guy that I am communicating with said they were going to replace something in the mirror assembly. Is there anything in the mirror besides the indicator? Would the indicator being bad cause the system to be completely inop?

I'm no being snarky here, but 2 questions
    1. Why not just let them fix it?
    2. Why would they not want to tell you what the fix is, if they're paying for it? Sounds fishy, maybe that's why you ask #1

A couple reasons. The dealer is about an hour away, so 2 hrs to drop off, 2 to pick up, plus the 2 days without the truck. It's a Chevrolet dealer and upon hashing out a deal, they originally said the truck was as is and they wouldn't fix it. When I told them that was a deal breaker because it could potentially cost $2k+ to fix (just pulled that # out of my ass to see what they would do) depending what the problem was, they agreed to look at it and see what it would need to fix. They had the truck for 48 hrs with a signed sales agreement pending the repair and when i returned to pick it up they said they had a part ordered and it should fix it. If it doesn't, they will send it to a toyota dealer and have them fix it. I didn't get that part in writing, unfortunately. Lastly, they claimed to have done a 148 pt inspection and showed me the checklist, which had a star next to the "outside mirrors/heat/dimming" which I assume was in refernce to the BSM inop, but no notes. Also, the inspection showed that the tires had 3/32-4/32" tread remaining, yet they never changed the tires and then tried to send me on a test drive in the rain on those bald BFG AT's. After I said something, they played dumb like they didn't know they were worn out. So I have little to no confidence in the dealer either being competent in the service dept or having any motivation to repair this issue on a used vehicle. Sure, I have thier commitment to reapir it in writing, but if they just keep giving me the runaround, what would I reasonably be able to do besides call them out on it? Not like I am going to make this into a legal thing, that would cost way more than just fixing it myself. The fact that they will not tell me what part they have to replace or what the part number is makes me think that they may be full of shit and not have anything, just buying time to BS me again until I give up.

    Thank!

Looks like inop system is either power, switch or left sensor related. Nothing the mirror located component would cause as I understand.

The "Brain" of the system is inside the sensors that are located in the corner of the rear bumper on each side.

Dash has an ON/OFF switch and buzzer, the mirrors have an indication light. The sensors also have a CANBUS connection, a reverse selected input.

Thanks. This is the info I was looking for. I just tracked down the fsm and came to understand it similarly but it's nice to have confirmation.

That is excellent! Is that in the fsm? I was looking for a system schematic but could only find schematics for individual components, not the entire system. Thank you

Reviving old thread. @caribe makaira , thanks for posting the diagrams. What is chance that a 2022, Sport with Safety Sense, Nav head unit, Premium Sport Package but no BSM nor RCTA has the wiring harness in place to add BSM and RCTA?

Not an easy install, it requires TECHSTREAM skills. If the harness to the rear bumper is lacking the terminals pins inside the connector in order to add the sensors, it would be VERY expensive. Plain jane version Taco only has 3 terminals for the missing sonar sensor (parking) and no cover.

Mine randomly quit working on the highway the other day, washed the bumper area and cleaned as best I could underneath it, still had the BSM unavailable in the dash when illuminated, figured I'd take it to dealer, dealer "ran a diagnostic" to the tune of $167 only to tell me it needed replaced on L passenger side to the tune of $2100 including recalibration, I told them ya I'll pass, went home read up on it some more realized after cleaning you should drive with the unavailable BSM on for like 5-10 mins and it will reset, low and behold it did, has been working no issues for over a month now.

Thanks again, I assumed I’d be looking for a connector with an end plug and no wire leading off.

Your diagram shows four sensors instead of the two in your earlier diagrams. I thought BSM only used 2 sensors but you need 4 sensors for backup assist.

Salesman said they can install BSM for $1500 which suggest the wiring harness is already there, but they wanted another $1500 for rear parking assist - but your diagram shows all four sensors in series so don’t know how they could offer BSM without rear parking assist if they use same sensors?

Yes, the Cross traffic sensors go with the parking sensors.

These are the various types of bumper harnesses, but they won't work with the cable going to the bumper that has only 3 terminals in its connector (BE1)[For the BSMS system]
