Swapped Hoods (!!!), DTRL Toggle Switch, Disabled seatbelt/ignition chime, Disabled lock/unlock beeps, Installed D-Rings in bed, Debadged "Toyota" on transom (now just one line straight across), Removed mud flaps, Removed TRD Stickers, Custom aluminum "ladder rack" with CB mount (Wilson 2000 Trucker; Uniden 520), WeatherTech; Just getting started!
My 2010 developed the tick/squeak at about 36K miles. Bought it CPO, so dealer replaced motor under warranty. So that ain't bad.

As others have noted, replacing the fan takes at most 5 minutes. I replaced mine yesterday - not because of chirp, I dealt with that for a long time... My fan just finally quit altogther. The prices I found - dealership $150, Orielly $98, AutoZone $98. Orielly had one in stock at nearby store - I got the VDO one made in Taiwan.

    3 bolts, 5.5mm and 1 connector. Done.

FYI, been over a year now since my new fan, the new design works. No noise. My fan runs all the time, never is shut off, ever.

I guess a year is all I can expect out of the latest motor/tsb?
Now it's chirping again on two speeds. Temperature has dropped and now it's noticeable. Is there a diy/fix for this finally? Sigh.

Bought a 2011 SR5 DC as certified pre-owned. The chirp started as soon as I left the dealership after delivery. Took it in with the TSB and part numbers and literally 30 mins later, I had a new motor in. Damn that noise was driving me nuts

Unless the VDO copies the latest version with part # ending with 43, you will get the crickets back.

When anyone gets the TSB done, they have to make sure the part number ends with the 43. That's the latest version. I bought 1 out of pocket and it's been great for the past ~10 months or so.

How prone are the 2012's to this? Does have any idea yet? Probably not because after all; if it ain't broken don't fix it. Lol.

Have a 2010. Just started making noise at 13,500 miles. Goes in next week to get replaced. Will check to make sure part ends in 43.

thanks for the thread. after hearing the clicking the past few months, i just took mine apart looking for leaves/mouse etc and found nothing.

i then disassembled, cleaned, resurfaced the brushes then greased the upper bearing. reinstalled the blower and the clicking/chirping issue has stopped.

i have an 11' that is still under warranty, but i did this in under a half hour vs the 3 hour minimum dealer trip.

i love this forum, thanks! :)

I'm sitting at the dealer having mine replaced as I type this. I spoke with the tech, he's very familiar with the squeek issue. LoL

I went to fix mine last weekend. Pulled it out and set it on my pile of stuff to bring inside and immediately dropped it, shattering the fan part.

Long story short.... I now have a new one from Toyota and it is nice and quiet... though not the cheapest way since I am way out of warranty.

    Hi Folks,
I took mine apart, cleaned it, greased the fittings, and the sound went away for a little while then winter hit. I went back to the dealer as my truck is under warrenty for 12k more, and got a 2012 replacement for 50.00 dollars. The mech. said they finally fixed it with the newer blower motors. I took pictures of the original and the new OEM 2012 motor for comparison. The 2012 has a nut on the top of of the fan assembly so that you can easily take it a part. I'll post the pictures when I get home today. I also took a shot of the part number, it ends in 43.

Just to chime in...I did this well over 7 months ago, and there hasn't been a hint of the squeak at all. I am really surprised that there hasn't been more discussion of this fix since it was posted. I didn't oil anything at all, just blew the dust out and filed the edges of the brushes down.

The "chirp" is clearly caused by the brushes and commutator strips. I polished my comm strips with an eraser nearly 6 months ago and not a sound out of it since.

So I did this tonight and it worked like a charm! Only thing is I need to take it apart and put a different grease on there because I can smell it when the fans on. Any recommendations on grease that won't leave an order and still work wonders on this? Thanks guys!

The manufacturer of these fans has been changed. My dealer says none have been returned since an install of March 2012 or later. A bad plain bearing can be fixed best buy being put in the garbage. You can mess with it all you want. Its just a matter of time before you are back at square one.
