I was just curious... I was quoted around 4k for a engine swap for my 06 X Runner. I was just curious is there a difference between the x runner engines and a regular taco V6 engine? Should I just get a used or refurbished engine? A few of my friends told me I should get a crate motor. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Depends on the price I guess, if you can find a low mileage used engine in a write off truck. (Rear ender frame damage for example) and hear it running I would go that route.

A refurb 4.0 would be hella expensive.

Correct on both parts. Some xrunner owners have swapped to the PreRunner/4x4 oil pans. Just need to hammer the crossmember a little.

Oil starvation is the easiest way, due to their shallow oil pans.

doubt thats happening in an x runner.

More likely is sharp turns causing sloshing of oil in the pan. I know someone made a pan spacer for the X runners that added in a baffle so oil didnt slosh up the sides.

Find a low miles 2007-2009 FJ with VIN number starting with 'J'. Unlike ALL Tacoma's and the FJ's with VIN starting with '3' or '5', the 'J' VIN 1GR-FE were actually made in Japan. Best 1GR-FE's in my opinion.I run a 2009 'J' VIN. I did the swap myself, wasn't bad at all.

How did you blow it anyway? Head gasket? Stuck injector diluting the oil with fuel?

Be aware... don't forget to read the fine print on crate engines and LKQ, etc... They claim there is a warranty, but read the fine print on what you have to do to qualify for the warranty!

Also, for crate engines, make God durn sure that when they rebuilt that engine they DID NOT mill down the surface of the heads! Timing will never be spot on! It will always have a slight retard which equals rough idle! The ONLY thing a machine shop should ever do on a 1GR-FE head is a valve job.

It's true, the J vin FJ/4runners dont leak from the timing cover. But I see more timing chain stretch engines from the J vin trucks.

Poor maintenance maybe? Sludge build up? Broken damper? Never heard that, but thanks for the info! I didnt see any slack or scarring on gears so I think I'm good, will keep an eye on it though! Thanks!

Lol, I'm leaning towards lack of maintenance... ALOT of young girls drive FJ's and unless daddy does maintenance, it don't get done, lol!
