All kinds 3 inch body lift/2 1/2 suspension lift. 31/11 1/2/15 tires All work done by myself for years. The only work performed by mechanic was fuel pumps. I also have a 90 Mustang 350 hp and I can never understand how come my Tacoma gets more respect Just got a 99 Jeep TJ that I rebuilt, and painted in the garage
Does the head just go on, or do you need to find dead center. Go valve by valve

If you go reman engine route, be careful with King Kar Auto in California. I bought a 2.7L from them and it has lost compression after 5,000 miles.

To do the job right one would have to be prepared to spend thousands. That would be true whether doing heads or a whole engine replacement.... Maybe, and that's a slim maybe, you can reuse the existing head and get by with just working that one side, the cost wouldn't be too bad, but at over 200k you should probably be looking at bith sides. If spending thousands on this truck isn't worth it to you I can understand selling as is.
On my 02 it cost me close to $4k(parts and labor) to have reman heads installed along with associated gaskets and some other items I had replaced.

I learned last week it has a blown head gasket. I’ve already spent thousands getting this truck running, so I’m not afraid to spend more on it. I love the truck. My daughter loves the truck. No intention to sell at the moment.

I had the same thing happen at 287,000, went with a 5vz-fe 3.4 L long block at aftermarket price for only 2500- labor was about 1500-4k total. I would have to talk to the mechanic who found it for me where it came from. Took about 2 months to ship though. Truck feels brand new now, if you keep up maintenance and everything else with that in there I don't see how you couldn't drive it another 230,000 at least.

Sorry to piss on the charcoal.....

BUT running these with the egr deleted .....will make em run hotter...
that's the reason they stuck that in there......not because they were feelin green....
they're not going to throw in an extra $300 in parts for fun.....

and really the heads can barely take it as it is.....

that and the LBJ thing is these achillea's heel....

    and welll......the rusty frame thing.....

I sold the truck. I'm hoping to get a newer tacoma after I'm done with school. Thanks for all the advice.

As far as doing a head gasket on 2rz/3rz is not super hard...

I barely have the tools and patience to do it myself.....

    a 5vz... I wouldn't even consider.....too many things to go wrong....

a local toyota note lot mechanic near me would do a head gasket for $800 ....2rz/3rz/22Re...
if I provided all the parts.......and couple 12 packs of Corona gold....
bad thing is it might take him 4 to 8 weeks to get to it....

And 1 out of 4 blown head gaskets....is not really a blown gasket.....
it turns out to be cracks between the intake and valves in the head...
    so proceed cautiously.

I personally dont trust reman heads.....those didnt fix the root cause of the cracking.....

As these truck age.....I would put egr maintenance high on the list....
......hopefully some of you can see the pattern.....

I bought the truck that way. I considered buying replacement parts. The thermostat never reaches halfway on the gauge so I figured it was fine.

If I go the route of buying replacement egr components, what’s best place to find them? All hoses are still there, for most part. And plugs. I’d need a new fuel vapor canister also.

Thats a lot stuff.....best bet is run a WTB ad in the classifieds here...

someone might have a 2rz/3rz part out.

If you bought it by the piece....new....it would cost you a fortune...

that charcoal canister all by itself is like $300....

I probably wouldnt do all that......I would just run it as a beater..

baby it as best as you can....I definitely would not pour a bunch of money in it....

I was told by the builder where I purchased my reman heads that the cracks, at least in part, are do to material hardness differences, in other words, the valves hitting the seat over the course of many miles. I can't tell if you are suggesting that it is actually EGR related? The 3.4l, as far as I know, doesn't even have EGR.

Ok. It’s my daughters truck, and she doesn’t rag it out. I actually bought all the parts when I got the truck for around $800. I ended up changing my mind & sent it all back like a dummy.

Yeah the 5vz has a whole lot less heat stress on it......
combination of the 3 cylinder and different cat set up...

You will see a lot more 3rz with blown head gaskets than 5vz....

Supposedly later on the 2rz's got rid of the egr crap....

.....but at an expense.....they switched it to a 2 cat system....

I suspect to control the combustion heat.....

    ....those cats get unbelievably hot.

I really wanted to get rid of the egr system when I installed my new engine...

But after months of researching it.....the risk from overheating was too high...

best I could do....is put in a whole new egr system.....even the feed pipe....

IF you watch that valve while driving on 'live data' its a very active robust system.

Its switching on/off along with the vsv valve....

The egr system makes a 4 banner run cooler......and everything last longer...
whole reason for running a trans cooler......keep it cool....

Its the cat thats back feeding infra red heat back up the system.....
this is how a blast furnace works...

Like I said.....Toyota aint gonna waste hundreds $ extra on BS....
or risk warranting something much more complex......

there's a very specific target goal...
and its not to make the hippies in Cali feel better....

Probably a lot of you dont have a problem with all this crap....
if you cat efficacy has dropped to very low...
Or your after market cat is low preforming ....runs cooler....

Real moral here is be careful when you buy one of these trucks.

Don't get stars in yours eyes.

You really won't know what you got until you drive it couple thousand miles...

When you run em at highway speeds for long periods is when that deleted egr overheating would most likely occur...
    .....shouldnt cause a problem otherwise...

but that overheating may go undetected in the headers......
