How much would it be to replace a blown head in a 91?

You should provide a little more info. What engine, any other issues, etc. I could give you a ballpark if I knew what engine.

What led you to the head being blown?

I picked up an 87 with the 22RE 4 Cylinder. Got quotes of around $400 just to have the head surfaced and the head gasket replaced.

But since the engine already had 245K on it and was 24 years old, I went ahead and bought a whole new long block for $1800. The truck has a whole new lease on life and the engine has a warranty on it so that if something else goes wrong its not coming out of my wallet.

Age I'm sure. If the coolant isn't changed often enough the metal starts wearing away. Or overheating, but that's not as likely.

Also, don't DIY a head gasket job if you haven't done it before. That will more than likely open a can of worms.

I had a 1991 V6, they were known to have bad head gaskets, well the engine went bad. I contacted my toyota dealer and I received a new engine from toyota. That was 10 years ago but if its a toyota recall its worth checkin into. I also bought the vehicle used with 110,000 on it already.
    Good luck

If you can get help from someone who knows their stuff, do it. No better way to learn. The 22RE is super easy to work on. But its still an engine that needs to be assembled carefully.

If it's the 3.0 V6. I would say pass. My buddy who rebuilt his 3.0 says he still doesn't trust the damn thing.

Barring a bad gasket, something causes it. Bad clutch fan, clogged radiator, low coolant, bad thermostat causes overheating and warped parts. Hydrolock can warp a head too, but more parts get damaged with that.
Make sure you investigate the cause before blaming the gasket. Mechanical failures and operator error are more common than bad gaskets.
Cover your ass before sinking money into the head. Have the engine inspected for cracks(dye penetrant), pressure test the radiator, replace the thermostat and clutch fan(if original).
If it were my truck, I would rebuild the engine. Why only do the head on a suspect engine. To test it, you need to tear it down. Why not replace the wear items while you're in there, IMHO:)

I agree, you definitely need to find out what caused it. Or if the truck itself is worth the $600, just accept the fact you need to rebuild the entire engine or buy a new long block.

My 1st gen 4Runner with the blown 22RE was $1400. The truck itself, even without an engine, was worth $1400 to me. The paint was beautiful, interior was in great shape, minimal rust, every electronic piece worked. So, I just accepted the fact I would be putting a new motor in it.

wow your goin over my head there. i have no idea about any of that or what to look for and like i said its not mine, this is just what the guy claims is wrong with it. so its sounding like your saying just replace the whole thing, and that should be about a grand or so im guessing? unless i have to pay someone to do it? which it would be more then of course. its sounding like i dont want to get into this. i dont want to go broke over it.

Yeah, not likely that it will work out in your favor financially. Could be a good project, but I wouldn't plan on it being a DD real quick.

Figure 12-24 hrs of work to remove and install engines. It depends on your skill level and tools.
Unfortunately, engine problems are a good sign of user neglect. Since you can't test the rest of the truck, I'd pass.
