Have a blown 6x9 in the driver's side door. It distorts only on some low bass frequencies. Like a popping crackling noise. It doesn't have to be loud for it to do this.

What would you guys recommend replacing the blown speaker with?

Installed a Kenwood excelon HU that is rated at 22w RMS per channel. This made a noticeable improvement in the rest of the sound to the point I think In could make due with just installing another albeit used OEM speaker.

But I was wondering if there are any options that might be better without installing an amp?

You can find tons of used speakers here in the marketplace for cheap. You can also drop tens of thousands of dollars in upgrades.

Power will always be the weakness.

For the front speakers, you'd have to replace the woofers in the door and the tweeter in the dash. After speakers and parts, you're over $200 for the fronts (on the cheap end) and a few hours of work.
Not bad, but it's definitely more than sticking an OEM back in there.

I'm still trying to decide if I just want to replace the blown speaker with an OEM unit or aftermarket components <$200.

The OEM speakers are pretty weak. Even an aftermarket HU with a small built in amp like yours can overpower those stock speakers easily. Crutchfield has a ton of 6x9 options for <$130/pair. Even the cheapest upgrades will be better than the stock pair.

Either get a replacement OEM or a set of Audison Prima 6x9 woofers.

Ahh yes, the classic “go big or go home” technique.

    still a modern favorite :D

    TBD
While you are replacing them. add some sound deadening on the door and you will notice a big difference as well. I deadened my doors with the stock speakers and a Kenwood excelon for a while and it was a very noticeable difference in sound and bass response for the factory speakers. This past week i finally added my Morel 6x9's up front running off an audio control L4.800.
Now I'm cooking with grease, just have to decide on a sub for the rear.
