First dunflop had a 3 inch gash in sidewall at 11k miles. Second i ran over part of a rachet strap and had a flat in 1 mile while driving over a bridge during high speed rush hour . At 32k miles. Had my toyo at2s for 28k miles and not a single issue.

Ouch used to rip my 2nd gen pretty hard and it took a beating, but drove like it was a princess its whole life. That should not have happened and there must have been a defect in his parts.

I must have missed the part where he was doin donuts. That is considered abuse, as in not normal driving.

Just cause you've done it, doesn't mean it isn't abuse. It's still a huge strain on the rear differential.

If I hadn't seen 5 or 6 other instances here of rear diffs blowing up I'd subscribe more to the theory that his abuse caused the failure

Much better! And how appropriate for laying down black marks on pavement.

Oh I know they have issues. Definitely not saying that, I've seen the threads. But for people to say that doing donuts isn't abuse just ain't so.

    it is abuse though?
You're forcing the whole driveline to break traction. Depending on the tires and how well they grip it can put a lot of strain on everything.

I agree it should be able to take some abuse, but saying its not abusing it is a bit of a stretch.
I'm curious to know though if this is a defect in material or engineering

I broke a tooth on a differential on a car years ago by popping the clutch hard going into second. Does he have a manual ?

    Totally incorrect.

    http://www.differentials.com/technical-help/failure-analysis

"This can be caused by too much power combined with oversized tires or tires that are stuck on an off road obstacle. Spinning tires that suddenly catch either off road or on the track can break differential parts as well. "

If he as at high rpm he has 300 hp going back there, and if it catches....pop.

I have done it on sports cars before. It happens.

Sounds like shitty parts still, I too have flogged many sports cars with no issues. In fact if you ever get the pleasure of slap shifting a double clutch E60 M5 from first to second with M mode enguaged and you grab second the hit from the rear end is so hard you feel like your gonna blow your fucking teeth out.
The new QMVH differentials in the new M/// vehicles are nothing short of amazing, they actually absorb all the stress and slipping and actually correct the vehicles lateral movement and put you back straight. It feel really weird the first time you feel it.
The point of all this is that I don't feel a diff should grenade unless your either running different size tires or stressing it constantly. I think Toyota got ahold of that Chinese steel which may or may not be their fault. id be curious as to what part is failing or which part is responsible for causing the howl everyone describes. I'd venture a guess it's related to the pinion gears but that's speculative. Most manufacturers ( mine included ) now swap entire assemblies and replace units as a whole. Units are built/remaned off site. IMHO it's not Toyota's fault but I'm not a fan of how coy they are about the problem rather than acknowledging and addressing it across the board.

This is definitely something that a good many truck owners will do with their trucks. If the diff cannot handle this level of playing, its a POS. I've driven 3/4ton [yes yes, I know, bigger diffs, blah blah. Its a heavier fucking truck too, remember] loaded with tools and parts around turns on gravel roads this hard all day on trucks with 100,000km+.

No reason this should happen to a new truck.

made me think of a video on youtube about diff lockers and the guy mentioned thats a great benefit to them.
You can get to an obstacle and instead of trying to get over it with momentum and flooring it you can lock the diffs and just slowly crawl over it, not risking spinning tires then bashing them on something and breaking a diff.

I have been pleasantly surprised also. I'm going to TRD Pro rims and BFGs as soon as these wear out however. The snowflake on the tires will take care of anything we see here on the West Coast and insurance will have zero excuse in the event of any accident.

Or Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws seem pretty decent. They have the snowflake in a P rated tire and they're dirt cheap.

If you go to about 24:30 that would be what I would consider abuse, no way should a Trucks diff grenade over some sand and dirt.

I thought it was bad when we were comparing to full size pick ups, now this ???

In this video he did not turn off the traction controls and it constantly was trying to catch him from drifting and putting a lot of strain on his diff. Most people do not read there manual and know how to turn off the toyota HELP systems that want to keep this truck from sliding. I have put my truck threw a lot of abuse and I can promise you it's worthy. Toyota knows who there audience is, they know your the weekend warrior taking your truck off-road and they know about overlanding they put millions of dollars in design on this truck. Don't be stupid guys.
