I have a 13 DC TRD offroad with 340 miles on it. I've noticed this week in the mornings when I start it up to go to work that there's a puff of smoke which I just figured was part of the new truck break in burn off process. Well this morning same thing but a nice big puff of blue smoke. In most cases that's not good. What are your guys suggestions or thoughts. Again only 340 miles and hasn't seen gravel or mud. I've been driving it like a baby doll.

My 11' Double Cab would do this if it was just warming if and I just gunned it. Then it went away(Had truck from new to 18,000 km's with no issues). I've never seen it on my 13' Access.

Shouldn't you be working today? Get back to work!!! Making that double time!

It shouldn't matter what Octane is running.

You have warranty for a reason. Doesn't hurt anything to go and take it in and have the Dealership look at it.

    Touche.

Blue smoke (Usually) has to do with the valve train but not always. Especially on older vehicles (which is not your case) where the valve guides / seals would get some wear on them an a small amount of oil would leak past them after the vehicle would sit for a period of time. When you started the engine the first time in the morning you would get a puff of blue smoke. I would definitely take it to the dealer and get it diagnosed. If nothing else for your piece of mind.

I've noticed my '12 will do that.... at times where I actually 'cause' it to.

Scenario: I'll go and start the truck only to move it into a different spot, then shut it off... so it never got a chance to warm up (about 30 seconds of rumtime).

Hours later I'll go and start it to warm it up and actually drive it, that is when I'll see an initial puff of blue smoke just after it starts.

I got nervous when I first noticed this, but I think it's because of the previous start of "moving it without warming it up" scenario.... otherwise it will never show blue smoke and all is good and normal.

I'm curious if your situation is similar to mine.

    ^^^ This ^^^

Take it back to the dealer right away, get them to fix the problem. a brand new vehicle (especially a Toyota) Should never puff blue smoke with this few miles on it, sounds like you have leaky valve guides, or another type of oil leak causing oil to get into the cyls.

Good luck, let us know what happens..

If you are just starting it and moving it, it will do this. You are not warming it up and are burning off excess fuel, this is actually hard on it. There is nothing wrong with your truck. I've noticed this on mine when I've started it and moved it then started it again. I've got almost 100k miles on mine and it doesn't use any oil. If u take thus back to the dealer you are wasting your time as well as there's.

08 speedway-- it has now 403 miles on it. It does it when I first start it in the mornings. Turn the engine in and poof a blue smoke cloud.

If I bought any new vehicle and it even hinted at smoking I would be back at the dealer asap.

Dumb question, have you verified the oil level is not overfilled.

Also consider the truck has no miles, I agree it should not have burnt oil smoke. Maybe it needs to be run a bit harder, especially to purge the BS PCV system that is known to pump small amounts of oil into the intake manifold. This is why so many posts about skanked up throttle bodies and intake manifolds.

The service dept said it's part of the break in/ burn off period. The smoke is something burning off inside the exhaust.

    Hmmm... I dunno.

Mine never did that but I would at the very least keep an eye on it. Like I said earlier blue smoke at start up is usually an indication of oil getting by the valve train (though the seals or valve guides). But... I would say with your truck being as new as it is that is a highly unlikely scenario. If it is just a puff every time you start up in the morning just check your oil level every week for a while. Hopefully it will go away. It would still have me a little concerned but I'm pretty OCD when it comes to stuff like that.

I sold cars for 4 years and I've seen lots of brand-new vehicles do it. Personally, I'd be more worried about potentially inexperienced/unscrupulous dealership employees tearing into my brand-new engine than a few puffs of smoke from the exhaust.

More than likely, what's happening is that the oil control piston rings haven't had a chance to get fully mated against the cylinder bore yet, and are allowing a bit of oil to enter the combustion chambers.

Keep driving it as normal, and this problem should disappear. I'd only start to worry if you get a few thousand miles on the truck and it's still doing it.

Do keep a close eye on the oil level.

115K on my '07 V6, uses no oil, and never any smoke.
