This started with a ToyTech Boss lift. Shocks were a problem due to previous owner trying to mod them. Took that off and ran a 2-1/2" spacer lift on stock shocks/coils for a few months. Then the current lift. She sits 2-7/8" higher than it was stock (front) and 2" higher in rear. With CMC (Thanks Everett!) and some fender trimming, 285's fit with room to spare. Just for schiddts n giggles, I mounted a set of 35"'s (trail grapplers) on stock chevy 17 rims. No rub when driving straight and no flex. Not the case when flexed. Some day there will be 35"'s. Just not now. It came with 265/75r16 Yokohama Geolander AT's. Decent tire for street. Don't mention mud. Switched to 265/75r16 Goodyear Duratrac's. After 55,000 miles of no complaints, it was time for something bigger. The decision was made to go with Cooper Discoverer STT Pro's in 285/75r16 (E). Could not be any happier! They seem to be wearing well, they perform off road incredibly well, and on road/wet road performance is as good as a mud tire can be. Much quieter than the Duratracs.

Plan is to get a few more things on the truck, but NOT to go so crazy with the armor. Trying to keep weight to a minimum.

Gear swap was just for my satisfaction. Very little numerical difference (went from 3.73 to 4.10) Gearing with 285's is just a hair lower than stock gearing with stock rubber. This restored a little "engine pep". Brought back SOME of the gas mileage I lost when I went from 265/lrC to 285/lrE tires.

The entire effort is to keep the reliability of a stock Tacoma with just a few mild mods to give it a bit of an upgrade in off road capabilities. Even with some off roading planned, I still have to keep in mind the 32,000 to 35,000 miles of highway driving I average yearly.

This is Toyota #5, 4wd #17. On November 22nd, 2014, I was on my way to work @ 5AM. I was driving my '04 Dodge 2500 Quad Cab, Long Bed, 4X4, Hemi/auto gas hog/parking nightmare. A car slowed in front of me because of a stray dog in the road. The car behind me never saw a thing....Just into and under my Dodge while she was still doing 50mph. The rear end of the Dodge got launched. The truck ALMOST stood on it's front bumper. Rear axle ended up under my back seat. The truck came down on the hood and roof of the Nissan Altima that tagged me. As bad as it probably looked, no one was hurt amazingly. So....Truck is paid off, but heavily insured. Just a matter of getting the check from State Farm. I had to have something to drive to work in the interim.

So begins the Tacoma. My wife suggested we start looking. I already had my mind made up. After 4 Toyota's, including my all time favorite vehicle, a 1984 SR5 reg cab/long bed 4wd, I wanted another Toyota. When we made it to the very first dealer, I saw a truck I really liked. It was a lease return with very low miles and not a scratch on it. I was working with a salesman I knew. I got up to go get a drink in their waiting area. When I came back, Sandy was signing papers. I had agreed on a price, but hadn't even started to talk about paying for it....She did that part. Wrote a check....and I had a Tacoma!

Not long after I got it, the health sorta went to hell. What at first appeared to be a return visit from Prostate Cancer I'd dealt with 5 years earlier turned out to be a massive infection in my kidney, triggered by a small tumor on my right kidney. A couple surgeries later, OVER IT! Now back to the Tacoma. Doctor bills caused a setback. But they won't STOP progress.

August 2017! Medical bills are paid off (for the 2015 Kidney surgery)

First we added a Pelfreybilt aluminum plate bumper. Warn VR12,000S winch, Baja Designs fogs, Pelfreybilt IFS skid, mid skid, and T-case skid. Removing sway bar (to install Pelfreybilt bumper re-enforcement brackets. Also installed Pelfreybilt standard rear bumper. Then AllPro sliders. Final August mod will be new (OEM) headlights to replace originals with burnt driving lights.

More to follow in September!

Credit where credit is due;

There's 3 things that have been done to this truck by "DYF"....aka Drunken Yard Fab. That's @beertimecontinuum When I was first starting to make minor changes, he donated a TRD skid plate to the cause. Karma being what it is, he wins a Demello front bumper very shortly afterwards. (Good lesson for everyone! Do good and good get's done for you!) Then the diff breather relocate kit. And finally, a fantastic job of doing the cab mount chop. Appreciate it greatly Everett!

Something else to add to the list! I had no clue new headlights were so cheap. Mine are scratched, spots burned from parking lights, and just looking old.....There will be new ones on the way before the week's out.
