Hi, I really like your install, I think I might do the same, may I ask where I would be able to purchase a small little grommet like that? thanks

Check an auto parts store like auto zone or pep boys, they usually come in a package with different size grommets, usually they are used to pass wires through the firewall. It should be on the aisle where they have wire, electrical tape etc. If not check where they have fittings and small parts.

I put mine on the 4X4 selector. Its close, no road noise, and since the selector pops right out, there is no drilling, and the mike is 1 foot from the radio, so it is a quick and simple spot. I have no problem with noise from the air outlet above it, so it has worked out great.

Started with base model, added accessory cruise, running boards, alloy wheels,in dash nav, etc, shoulda bought a TRD to begin with!
If the mic only has sound ports or holes in its front it is omni-directional and you can flush mount it in a rubber grommet (to reduce mechanical vibration pickup) on the dash and its pickup pattern will be hemispherical. However, if the mic has sound ports on the side, do not block them or recess them behind the panel. They make the mic more directional so background noise enters off-axis and is cancelled out. Mount this type of microphone in as close to free space as possible, like on the steering column, visor, or rear view mirror so the side ports are not blocked. If you do flush mount it, have it poke out enough so the side ports are not blocked. Proximity to the driver's mouth is probably the most important factor in minimizing noise. Before you pick up your drill, try various locations with the AC blowing, the engine running, and driving if possible, while a helper listening on a telephone in a quiet room evaluates each position.

I mounted mine in the mirror trim. Call quality and voice commands work very well.

For those who mounted it by the rear view mirror did you have to take down the headliner or just tuck in along the edges?

Nice. I want to put mine there but did not want to pull the headliner to do so. Thanks.

In somebody else's car with their windows up :D

Seriously though, I can't even go through the car wash with mine much less with the windows down.

@8357: Your mic is directional so you might get a little improvement by aiming it more toward the driver. That is not a prediction, only a suggestion.
@Pinktaco: Try various locations as close to your mouth as possible. You can also search for a location with the least wind turbulence. This is not very sophisticated but seriously, use a wet finger. You might reduce the wind noise by placing an open cell foam ball over the mic, like the ones you see on TV news. Again, a "maybe," not a prediction. Radio Shack has them: "Windscreen for Tie-Clip Microphone" $3.99 for a pack of four.

Same here with a Pioneer F-PH8000BT. I tried it in the center and had to speak loud to be heard.

A Pillar drivers side at the top. Works great.

Though this thread is a year old, its the best result when searching for where the stock mic is located. Thought it to be useful.

On my 2013 Tacoma Access Cab, I found the stock mic by guessing its location: in the roof console. There is a panel between the push-button lights. A gentle touch with a flathead screw driver can remove the panel. The mic has 4 wires (red, white, black, yellow), and by touching the felt on its top, I can feel two holes, so I think each pair of wires applies to a mic and there are two mics on the unit.

I will be replacing the stock head unit which already has hands-free phone calling and might have to replace the mic. I don't know.

But, if my stock unit did not have bluetooth, and I was looking for a good place for the aftermarket mic, I'd look here first to see if the wires are present, then splice in the aftermarket mic some how.

Whatever you do, just don't flush mount it anywhere near a vent like I did. Even though its not under direct coverage of the a/c vent, I can't talk to anyone without turning off the fan. They complain about static. :(
