Never Never Modify! Keep it aggravation free!
No way! My wife had a 2007 and 2009 3 series. Both were a big piece of junk and nothing but expensive problems. I rather drive a AMC gremlin than a BMW. I'll keep my 2.7

My ex gf son had one, transmission and head gasket failures kept it in the shop more than on the road, he ended up trading it to a guy for an S-10.

MZ3 here. Arguably one of the lower-maintenance BMWs around, but it still needs to be looked after.

The plus side is that since I'm used to frequent expensive maintenance, the Tacoma gets more attention than it needs and I am still happy about it because parts are so cheap.

    My list of issues...
Chevy decided to place the front rotors inside the wheel hub. This means to do a brake job, you had to take the entire front end off the truck. It was common to damage the abs wire while doing this. I had a shop do it, the ruined the abs then refused to repair that.
Both front hub bearing out by 100k.
Throttle body failure. Had to replace the throttle body+ the sending wire + throttle pedal as chevy only sold it as 1 part.
The transmission was coated in oil and ready to blow at 135k when I traded it in. Thankfully it didn't get put on a lift.

S54 engine had MANY fatal problems. They increased the engine warranty to 100k miles because that engine had bearing failures.

BMW was actually downloading the computer info to show how high the RPM was and how many times the driver ABUSED the S54 engine and used this info even if it was BELOW the factory redline. Some very angry owners !!

If BMW made a pickup...it would pull 500 lbs, it would need premium gas, it would cost $80,000, and it would have the resale of a park bench.

Absolutely. The S54 is a textbook example of a (somewhat) high-maintenance engine that pays out when you keep it up, bearing issue aside. A good buddy of mine pays the bills doing bearing jobs for S54s (among other Z repairs).

Mine is an S52, though, and those are rock-crushers.

Amen. Seen the inside of the new Supra? You'd think you were sitting in a BMW... their dash, console, shifter, etc is copy paste. Its 99% BMW with a new skin on it. I don't see it being successful now, and especially in the future like the 4th Gen Supra's.

Known problems with mine (2007) is convrt. power top motor , elect. steering motor , plastic Verible Valve Timing gears .

battery replacement is over $400. You must have a VENTED battery tube and then get the battery and alternator to work together ( calibration ) or have a warning light stay on.

    2 major rules in life.

Don't get into a land war in Asia and don't buy a used GERMAN car that is not covered by a FACTORY warranty.:)

It would have been better to have kept it a inline 6. My nephew has a Hummer H3 with the 5 cylinder. I’ll take my V6 in my Tacoma over that power train anyday.

Dream Tacoma would be the 4.6l and a 26g fuel tank.

Chopped back of Tesla off and made it a bed. Still electric. I skimmed around, looks cool. No charging stations in the mountains or desert so I’m not interested
