I washed my truck today and noticed a lot of tiny rust spots coming through the paint. Most of the spots are on the tailgate, but they're all over the truck. I've had the truck for about a year and I live in Utah so there's a lot of salt on the roads. But, I wash my truck regularly and it gets parked in a garage.

Anyone else have this problem? I'll contact Toyota tomorrow to make sure there aren't any warranty issues.

Completely unrelated: I was at an outdoor expo a few months ago and I was told by the owner of Ursa Minor Vehicles that his company is coming out with a shell for the 5 foot Tacoma. The shell will open just like the one for the wrangler.

Rail dust. Use a clay bar then seal it up with some type of sealant of your choice.

Have you clayed your truck? That looks like rail dust or iron filings that's bonded to the paint.

I had company vans that were always white. I noticed the same thing on a lot of those vans after one year in the salt. The rust never seemed to grow, but it did seem weird.

No problem. It can be one any color though, white just shows it worse. It's a simple fix.

Yep, its on almost every vehicle, just easier to spot on lighter colors and will make a come back if you live in the salt/belt, etc. after each winter. Nothing to fret, good clay bar, some iron-x and wash will take care of it.

Yep, Iron X on a white vehicle will remove that.

This is my first post and I saw what happened to 'Stoormtrooper' on his first post so thanks for taking it easy on me.

X2. Iron X in a foam cannon does great on this stuff as well. Haven't used it in a while, but it is great stuff.

As others said..metal on the surface of the paint from transport and/or brake dust. Clay can knock the head off but it may return if the filling is still embedded in the paint. I like to clay first to knock the head off, then follow up with iron-x which helps to further reduce the filling and highlights that the body of the filling is still there. There are also other decon methods using highly acidic and basic washes but those are very risky on plastics and can discolor them permanently if left on too long...so I try to avoid that method.

Could be mag chloride spots also. They're a pain to get cleaned off of white.

I'd do it yourself if it were me. They'll have somebody clay-bar it which will look fine for a while until it comes back, always does. Follow instructions above.

This is not something you bring to a dealer. They are not equipped to properly remove iron fillings from paint.

Thanks for the post! I have the same problem. 2016 Tacoma in NY, but first saw the problem after just one winter. I’ve been upset to say the least. Glad it sounds like an easy fix. Thanks again for raising the question!
