Body shop work… is it bad or am I just picky?

Just my opinion:
If you notice things now, they will continue to irritate you over time.
I had a deer run into the front/side of a really nice 2 door coupe I had a few years ago.
The repair cost was half the value of the car.
I got it back after a couple of weeks and could not see a single issue or problem.
Hope you didn't sign off on it.
I would approach the body shop owner/gm and see what they say.
As a last resort work through your insurance.
It probably didn't cost you anything including no impact to collision deductible.
Where I am a collision with an animal is no fault.

 

Haha I'm the opposite. Obsessive about my old beaters. Now that I know I can afford them my outlook is different. I take care of it the same but I don't lose sleep over the dings & scrapes. "Tools, not treasures"

 

I didn't read anything after it came in contact with a deer and I only looked at the pictures to see if I could spot what you're spotting. First off your grill is painted all wrong that color tone isn't even close, so if that's one of your complaints I agree. The other fitment with the plastic parts seems to be off just minorly and can probably be massaged by adjusting the clips. They didn't use good quality fenders they're probably non-capa certified so yeah sometimes the headlight cutouts and body lines are a bit off. If it was my body shop I would have fixed that before paint but I'm going to guess they had those parts painted and tossed them on before they verified fit with anything as most insurance shops do.

 

HECK NO you are NOT being picky and you should defiantly contact the claims adjuster and shop if you haven’t already. For those saying this is OK they are a little less caring than some of us… ANY REPUTABLE shop stands behind “trying to make it look like it never happened” and that grill is a DEAD giveaway of something being off, then the headlight fitment.

 

When you first picked up your truck, did you check it as closely as you are now? It is almost impossible for the repair to be perfect, especially since it's under the microscope now. I'm not saying whether the work is good or not, that is your call. If you're not happy you should bring it back, you paid (one way or another) for it to be repaired.

 

The plastic trim, the body shop probably didn't spray it with sealer prior to base coat. The sealer keeps the paint from getting absorbed by the primer.
And they probably didn't add flex agent to the paint.

90% of people won't notice it. But the other 10% will notice.

If it was my truck I would be meticulous about it.

Get the truck under fluorescent lighting. All sorts of imperfections will be noticeable

 

If you’re not happy, contact the claims adjuster. They are the only one that can force the situation. Had the same issue with an Infiniti g37 a few years ago. The front fender they replaced made a huge gap to the hood. Body shop tried to fix it by adjusting the hood. That really didn’t work. They sent me back to the adjuster… insurance company will cheap out in parts if they can

 

My truck came stock from the factory with a scratch on the lip of the hood near the windshield so id say yours looks pretty good

 

Par for the course. The values got a lot more residual damage that what you can see with your eyes. Any insurance claims are like a permanent record that will follow it forever killing the resale price. Your going to have to accept its not new anymore and compromised to some degree.

No matter how nice you get it, likely a guy that knows paint and body work can still find evidence of the repair.

 

Along with all the other stuff already mentioned, this would piss me off every time I got in the truck. Insert was probably tweaked on impact and just reused. Take it back.

 

The problem with the grille not matching is that it comes pre-painted from Toyota.
That color probably has several variants, all of which may or may not match exactly. I'm sure they mixed paint to match the truck, not the grille.
I'd ask them to fix the flare and the scoop gaps.... fix the squeek and install that clip missing from the air guide.

 

There's a orange/red clip fastener in center. My bet it's broke. They tried to reuse. Mine had same thing. They replaced it and it was fine.

Thank you guys for all the opinions. I’m checking the itemized list to see if they used OEM parts as they should have because that’s what’s on my insurance policy.

As for the body work, I’m going to contact my insurance adjuster to see what can be done. It’s been a 50/50 split based on y’all’s opinions but I’m not gonna live with something I’m not completely satisfied with. I appreciate the Tacoma World opinions on this. Thank you all!

 

Simple: Unacceptable: Especially the painted grille surround and that ridiculous hood-scoop gap. Did they replace the hood or just "buff it out"? That scoop on a new hood should sit perfectly on it. From my understanding, pre-painted, color keyed grill surrounds are available as OEM parts... and if the new hood, fenders and other bits are a decent match, why isn't the grill? Good body shops can repair a car to within a fraction of factory. It looks like they put it back together like they were in a rush.

Take it back and point out the issues. Ask them if they would accept the truck as-is if it was their own vehicle. Don't sign off with the insurance company until you are happy. Your insurance policy isn't a: "we'll do the best we can depending....but jeez pal: you DID hit a deere" policy. It's a: "make me whole again" agreement. Squeak over bumps!??! Take the adjuster for a ride. SQUEAK!? I'll stop here before the "Banned Squad" comes for me. Good luck!

 

Paint will never match if you look hard enough. Even from the factory different base materials will come through and change how it looks. On top of that your now adding fresh paint next to paint that’s been out in the elements. Best they can do is blend it from a body line or 3/4s of a panel over.

 

Curious if you, the OP, chose the body shop or not??
Side note: The bumper doesn't look OEM to me but I could be wrong

 

Tell your insurance company the work is unacceptable, let THEM deal with the body shop.

The excuses they gave you are complete bullshit. Plastic just paints different? Why did the factory paint match?

 

I agree with most it isn’t a perfect body work job, I’d concentrate on the alignment of parts. For the squeak that needs to be fixed. Paint is never going to match perfect unless you repaint it all and that depends on the body shop.
