I have heard that it is illegal in Ca. bu not sure about other states. Ca. has some strict laws when it comes to vehicles and trailers. I know their trailer brake requirement is stricter than Tx.. They even require clips on safety chains.

My friend - you are correct.

If what I read on the Internet about the law is correct then trailer hitches are illegal w/o a trailer in CA. Not sure about CT but I'm not surprised that CA has made something else illegal.

So my trailer hitch probably weighs about 20 pounds. If I put this thing in the back of my truck and I get in a wreck, or worse, I put it in my cab of my truck - this thing becomes a dangerous projectile.

I'm guessing having the trailer hitch stick out is problem with the "safety bumpers".

I think I'm going to risk it for now and plead ignorance.

I use hitch locks that have a rubber cover that protects the key opening from grim/dirt build up.
    ...doesn't everyone ? hmm

I use the Trimax anti-rattle hitch keyed locks
on both my hitch and trailer tongue.

yeah I know blurry crap pictures... but deal with it. Lol

The Bolt has a rubber cover over the key hole. The problem was internal were it connects to the hitch pin. I received my replacement last week free of charge. I will probably save it for Tundra or sell with Tacoma.

Interesting. I've always been in the habit of removing the lock every time I'm done towing. I never leave my hitch on because while it will mitigate the damage done to the vehicle, there was a study (i'll try to find it), which showed an increase in the damage the passengers take, since the force of the impact is pinpointed and tied directly into the frame, as opposed to spread out over the bumper, which is uncoupled from the frame via crumple zones.
