showed my buddy my drop steps and the first thing he said was " man someone is gonna jack those off your truck- better get some security bolts"

so my question is does anyone have good recommendations to prevent theft of drop steps or nerf bars?

    • Something as simple as JB Weld on the bolts, it will slow them down and maybe they'll move on to an easier victim ? If someone really wants what you have, they're going to get it regardless of what you do.

+1, McMaster carr is awesome. Strange shipping setup but it was like $15 on a $100 that I ordered at 5pm and it was at my residential door at 8am. I'm ok with that!

Get creative, use one torx, one e-torx and an Allen socket! hahaha oh that would piss a thief off

When I lived in a sketchy neighbourhood I used to use allen head bolts and fill them with clear silicone after installation. Cheaper than proper lock bolts anyway. These days i’d probably weld a couple of the bolts on each side.....

    California or Texas?

At certain point, they're going to steal the whole truck.

Bartact Seat Covers, Cali Raised LED molle bed system, radio knobs and Subaru Tweeters, OCD interior parts, OEM Exhaust tip, dash cam, hood protector, various theft deterrent items. Still a WIP
I live in a city where if its not properly secured some crackhead or meth mouth will try to steal it but I haven't heard of anyone trying to steal sliders, nerf bars, or steps. I don't think they get much for them in comparison to something like custom wheels and tires.

We have a number of different kinds of thieves here:
    • the zombies who typically check doors in the middle of the night and might break a window if they spot valuables.
    • the pit crews who typically take things like wheels and tires, tailgates, and gas.
    • the drivers who just steal cars and trucks to do other crimes, joy ride drug binges, strip them, and/or sell them to chop shops.
Some higher end vehicles may end up south of the border but that is becoming more difficult and these brainiacs are just looking for a quick turn around score. Complete vehicles, wheels/tires, and stereo systems have always been a target of thieves here as long as I can remember.

Anti-theft devices are a deterrent but if they really want what you have and they are motivated they will probably get it. The only thing you can do is slow them down in hopes they get caught. I would mark any expensive items in some way that they can be identified if stolen and/or take pictures of serial numbers. A lot of stuff ends up in pawn shops, craigslist, or Facebook mark within hours of being pilfered.

If you buy security bolts, you should chose based on which ones have a key/bit that can apply a lot of torque to it.
Ask yourself: 5 years from now when its rusty, which of these can I still loosen?

Longer bolts and smash the threaded end with a hammer.
