248 thousand miles on my 97 Taco all most all winter in 4 wheel drive because in iffy weather I never knew if it was wet or frozen it's damn dark at 5 AM same thing with my 94 Taco and my wife's 88 Jeep only reason I took it out was to save fuel when the roads were dry but you are right I did have to replace the rear U joint at 209,000 miles in the 97 and a front axle joint in the Jeep at 108 thousand sold the 94 with 156K never did any thing to it. I'm not suggesting you run around a parking lot in low 4WD doing figure 8's but driving in high on the road won't screw it up it will waste gas and ware tires. Think about this if Toyota tells you to drive it in 4 wheel drive they are the ones that have to fix it if it brakes under warranty for at least 36K and they aren't about to tell you to do some thing if it's going to cost them money. You drive your truck your way I'll drive mine the way I have for the last 49 years what's right for me is not necessarily right for you.

Good luck with that. Sorry...maybe you missed this post.
Quit being a stubborn ass. If you actually read all the posts you'll see exactly what I said and meant. Toyota tells you to drive in 4x4 yes. They also say in big letters NOT FOR HARD PAVEMENT. You want to try getting that warrantied, your ass is getting laughed out of the dealership. The lawyers are going to tell you that you should have found a soft terrain to drive in 4x4 on.

But whatever. I feel sorry for your truck.

And yet my post was 100% correct. Lockers used rockcrawling will break axle shafts at a greater rate than you will ruin transfer cases driving on the street in 4 hi. Should you leave a truck in 4hi on dry pavement? No. Will it cause cumulative damage? Yes... and so will using a locker while rockcrawling. I have seen dozens of snapped axle shafts from lockers and very few destroyed transfer cases. The winding and unwinding of the axle shafts when loaded will fatigue them. Yet we accept this wear. I accept the wear of using 4hi on pavement just like using my locker and it seems like I have a more realistic view of the risks and wear involved from the comments here. This 4hi on pavement issue is well known but less risky than you make it out to be. It woulb be great if I had a full time 4wd option, but I don't so I make due. If I bust the chain in my transfer case in 100000 miles I will just fix it.

    ^^ And this.

Don't worry about it man. A little driveline tension is no big deal. These things aren't delicate flowers.

That picture is crazy, how crappy that TC is to split in half. Unless TC was hit on the rock and cracked already.
With so many people screaming here you would think our TC's are made out of paper or something.
I think I need to buy FORD. :D My buddy went 100+ miles plus at highway speeds in 4wd. He did that several times, he tough 4wd is the same as AWD. ;)

Read your manual again there is nothing in it about not driving on hard pavement it says to drive it once a month in 4 wheel drive for 10 miles it does not say go out on a frozen lake or drive around in a sand pit. I do think you may have to deal with a lawyer if you drive around in your neighbors new mowed lawn " but officer I can't drive it on the street"

Toyota trucks are great. It's okay to drive in 4-hi, just don't swap between 4-hi and 2-hi at freeway speeds; slow below 65 (I go to 50) and switch. I constantly swap between the two on the freeway if I hit heavy rain or if I'm going through snow on long road trips.

The clunk is okay, just tension. Happens to me at times, so I let off the gas and let it naturally slow a bit before switching.

    Dealership confirmed the above^^
