    All the things!
Sliders mount to the frame and can support the weight of the truck (even when impacting a rock). Nerf bars or steps mount to the cab and are only intended to support human weight.

I have not one scratch or ding on my truck yet.... granted I rarely drive it. Makes my driveway look killer but Id rather my car seeing as how it gets 40mpg :)

Look into body side moldings . like these .

    https://www.carid.com/2016-toyota-tacoma-custom-body-side-moldings/
Note that if you park next to 4 door vehicles the rear doors of these vehicles hit above sliders. The edge of the doors are higher as they end above the wheel arch .
Like said here already , dents and scratches from trails and use are one thing , but parking lot dings from people that do not give a damn are another . :annoyed:

I’ll report back when I get the dent fixed. It’s small....but I see it.

Sad day... I got my first ding today too. Only took 3 months. I just wish people would be honest and tell you. Probably wouldn't even care at that point cause you know the dings will happen over time. On a fun note...I'll post the picture and see who can spot it. Where's Dingo?!?!20180923_101539.jpg

I’ve got the same running boards on mine ... keeps the door dings away with smaller/lower vehicles but there’s not much you can do with taller vehicles.

Paintless dent repair is the way to go. Shouldn’t cost all that much. I bought a door from the salvage yard practiced till I got good at it. It definitely takes some skills to become proficient at it. Get references and find a good dent repair person near you. Personally I think putting moldings on the 3rd gen Tacoma would look ugly. Just my opinion.
