It's definitely a little easier to put a turbo on one. Those 6 cyl definitely put down the power though!

I think he was saying the 4cyl is easier to put a turbo on. If so, I agree completely

Sweet! I used to be on TTORA back in the day as well back in '07 or so. It's a great resource for information!

How do you feel about the 4.88/33"s/5-speed combo? I'm sure it's awesome offroad, but does it leave you wishing for a 6th gear on the hwy?

I finally had a solid amount of time today to get started wiring up the Megasquirt harness into the URD PNP harness. Wiring it up this way will allow the MS to control the important stuff like fuel, timing, idle, and boost control while the stock ECU will still run the gauges, A/C and such. It's similar to how a Boomslang harness would be done just using one from URD and wiring it in myself. In addition to this, I still need to hook up the 10 ground wires from the MS harnesses as well as the boost control solenoid and the AFR sensor that my AEM gauge uses. I typed out a map of what wires went where and printed that out in order to keep straight with where I was at. The stock ECU wire color coding wasn't really all that helpful for my purpose since all the PNP harness wires I tapped into are white, but I thought it would be helpful to someone who is wiring into their stock wiring. This is for the 98-00 Tacoma that uses the two separate coils. I'm copy/pasting that below. Also, here are a few helpful links i used as well including ECM pinouts for early model Tacomas.

When I was all motor it was a pretty good set up. It put the engine right in the sweet spot as far as the power band goes. Since I've turbo'd it though, I've been thinking about how 4.56's would be a better set up. It sits around 3200 RPM at 75mph on the free way. It's not too bad, but on some longer trips up to CO and Norther NM, it's gets to be a bit much. What is pretty good about it though, is on the freeway I'm just outside of boost so any little bit of throttle and it's boosting similar to a S/C set up.

Doesn't look bad at all to wire up. Thanks for the wiring link. Of course I'm the one with the 99 CA motor. Going to make finding wires easier for me.

A lot of the MS wires aren't used since they're extra injector and spark wires if you're running an 8 cylinder w coil on plug. Most of the time so far was spent more on the research side of it and in just looking through the pin out. That link for the ecm pinots has every year of early model Tacoma, auto & manual, cali & fed spec. Makes it easy to compare

I think 33s are the limit for me in tire size. If anything I may see if someone wants to trade me their 4.56 for my 4.88 at some point

Last night a local (in ABQ) was hosting a "Dyno Drag Night." $40 for 2 pulls so I though I'd take my truck up there and see what it's making before I get the Megasquirt on it. I ended up with some surprises. Since i put the new exhaust on, my boost gauge had been getting up to 9psi at full boost. But when they datalogged my boost on the dyno, I was at 10.94psi after the first pull . I got a little freaked out when i saw that number. Also, my AFR's after about 4.1K rpm were getting back up into the 14's according to their wideband sensor. Total HP was 182.7 and TQ was 220.9. Their program also calculates "corrected" numbers that are supposed to estimate if I was at sea level (i'm at ~5000ft here). These numbers were 226.1hp and 273.5tq. The owner said it's usually within about 5-10hp accurate in his experience of running cars on his dynojet and then running them on dynos at sea level. Either way, I wasn't too concerned with the hp and tq numbers being high or low, I just wanted a baseline before i install the MS. I did think of some questions that i was hoping some of you could answer for me. I've attached the dyno sheet and a video of the pull with the tech there driving my truck. Analog 1 on the bottom is the boost pressure in psi on the same graph as AFR. I didn't make the 2nd pull after I saw the boost and AFR numbers.

    1. My boost gauge at full boost reads ~9psi, however, the datalog at the dyno said my set up produced 10.94psi. Being at 5000ft elevation, is this what is making up the 2psi difference in readings? Does this mean that my boost gauge is 2psi off (low) of what is actually being produced? And i should tune for 2psi higher than my gauge reading?

    2. I am in the process of installing a Megaquirt 3 (big thanks to the help of Kurt on CT). When i start tuning, I want to start with lower boost... around 5psi. I currently am running an older style 38mm Turbosmart WG using an even older Tial 8psi WG spring. The WG I am using has the larger diaphragm than the newer more compact TS WG's and uses a diaphragm for the new larger 50/60 TS WG's. Does this mean that I need to also use a spring for the larger 50/60 WG? And will the psi ratings transfer directly to being used in the older style 38mm WG?

    3. My AFR gauge at full boost on the street reads 10.8 @ 4500rpm (pre cat) where the dyno's meter that was inserted into the tailpipe was reading much higher. Does the AFR sensor placement make that much of a difference? They said they could tap into my sensor for a pre cat reading, but I didn't want to make another pull after what saw on the first one.

I was really hoping to get some 8-9psi numbers on the stock ECU just to help contribute to the data that out there, so I was a little bummed when i saw the datalog reading 11.

Looks like the ECU having issues keeping up with the demand. Get that megasquirt in!

And before the cat is best for O2 reference
