Boot Slide mod. No more blowing cv boots.

Those look like aftermarket/parts store axles I'm assuming? Since the shaft isn't green or blue like OEM ones

The parts store axles use a boot material that sucks pretty bad, I've blown quite a few of them even when they weren't rubbing. Road debris would knick them easily

 

Nah I only run OEM's. That color you don't see is because of that that thing in the NE we like to call "rust"

So far the magical combination that always worked for me was OEM outer boots, SDHQ inners.

But looking at that CV's that might be an OEM axle I never did the slide mod on. I never had issues until I got the coilovers with more droop. At this point I can't keep track of what are my used OEM's I did the slide on or didn't do it on. I do have a parts store axle in my OSK but never put it anywhere near the truck yet.

 

How many tubes of grease would it take per axle?

 

You mean filling those boots vs OEM style? Or in general? I have to look at my grease kits. I've done weird shit over the years, making my own blends, or using OEM packets. It takes less than you think since the tulip occupies a ton of space.

 

In general, just trying to get an idea of what I will need.

 

i mean the easy route is to just get an oem boot kit. Comes with the grease for both inner and outer, clamps and maybe a new c clip iirc. Since I’ll be rebuilding whatever this fucked one is I’ll do an inventory of what random grease I have too.

 

Any suggestions on what replacement CV axles to go with? Just got under my truck and the boots look to be cracking a bit. The inners look about the same on both sides. I would like to try to replace them in the next two weeks because I am home from school but I'm not in a huge rush past that because it doesn't look too bad. I drive maybe 50 miles a day hunting but no 4wd needed. I would plan to reboot OEM axles with whatever boots are recommended to keep for when/if replacements have issues but it looks like to me I could get away with OEM boots again because these seem like they just cracked from drying out. Also is there anything else I should do while I replace both CVs? I saw some stuff about diff seals but only if they were leaking. Where would I want to check this? There is nothing obvious. Thanks

O'reilly's has some new high angle CV axles for our trucks that a few guys on here are running and seem to like, they are interesting looking... I'll probably try them out next time I need CVs

As far as aftermarket axles go they look promising. Other than that I would recommend going with rebuilt CVs from CVJ or direct from Toyota if you can find them in stock.

I'll solve part of the riddle.

No "special pliers" necessary.
These are what I use to clamp the boots.
(3/8" Heavy Duty Zip Ties work as well.)

Self Locking Boot Clamps.
Simple.
Effective.

Dumb question(s) coming…

My inner DS boot is completely separated at the small end. I have replacement boot kits (after 3 years in a box, it is clear I will never replace/install them.)

Does the boot actually turn/rotate with the axle either in 4wd or 2wd? Or is the greenish piece between the boots the axle or a sleeve over the axle?

If it doesn’t rotate, couldn’t I just cut a new boot, wrap it around the old, add a couple zip ties and call it better than what it was?

 

The boot in question NEEDS replaced.
The CV Axle needs to be removed to do this.

I started the boot stretch mod this morning when my new boots arrived. Everything went as planned then I ran into a hiccup after removing the boots and the clip ring (inboard side). The tripod seems to be seized up on the shaft, I don't want to keep hitting the lip and risk damaging it, any one encounter similar problems and with a solution to share?

 

I used a 3 jaw gear puller. They can be had for cheap at harbor freight or the like. Hope that helps.

So, in those photos, you're trying to tap the tripod further down onto the shaft, right? (that is, you aren't trying to remove it from the shaft yet). There's a retaining ring on the end of the shaft that keeps it from coming off. Not sure how a puller will help you get it further onto the shaft.

Sounds to me like you have either (a) dirt or (b) deformed splines or (c) corrosion in the splines/tripod. I'd try some penetrating oil and brake cleaner (looks like you've used a bunch already), and then I'd use a steel tube that fits the tripod and goes around the shaft to try and tap the tripod further onto the shaft (to expose the retainer ring). At that point, if you don't have the tripod moving freely, the 3 jaw gear puller that @Nixinus mentioned may help to pull it off.


Also, not sure if you've seen this, and of course, it just covers the general process - not the issue you've run into - but if not, it could be helpful to show you what to expect.

+1 seems like the ring on the end isn't removed @45thparalleln . Those splines look good to me, knock the tulip down towards the ring you just removed and you'll see the other ring causing you grief I bet.

 

Much appreciated I knocked it down towards the shaft so the 2nd ring is exposed then very easy from there lol. I had no idea there were 2 rings so i kept trying to hammer it outward foolishly. Installation was cake, the fins are all nicely spread apart now no more replacement for a couple years i hope

 

Definitely going to try the boot slide mod with new OEM axles. I’ll definitely keep my old units and hopefully I don’t have to reboot them with the CVJ boots if the boot slide mod fails down the road.
