Any trail-running shoe for hiking. Don't hike in boots if there is a trail; boots can be a good idea if you're hiking off-trail, ie hunting.

It's pretty hard to find a do-it-all boot... get a good boot and a comfy running shoe.

When I went to Afghanistan I wore a pair of black hawks. they had a zipper on the side, were water proof and desert ready with breathability. I love them. Very good for the rough terrain, rocks and thick sand.

Lots of good info. In a nutshell, they're not interchangable.

Work: Again, depends! I've used Chippewa's for > 10 years, going strong, replaced the sole once. Love them. Heavy and pricey. Redwings are their less pricey (still good quality)/lighter competition. These are good for EMS/Fire crews, maybe not so much construction.

Hiking: Columbia are fine. Mainly what fits your foot and what type of hiking. Day hikes with a light pack? Get some shoes, I like Merrill. Multi nighters in the Sierra's? Get something more substantial. I've had pretty good luck with the "cheap" jungle boots at the Army-navy stores. $20-30, last a few years, not too big a deal to toss them if they get banged up, expect to get some new insoles for them. Also been OK w/ Columbia, North Face and some brand I forget from LL Bean.

Red wing all the way. Go with the composite toe if you're in a cold climate. Same protection without frozen toes.

They are nice but my experience with them was not favorable-they didn't stand up to my job-fell apart. The Timberland boot is by far the toughest boot I ever used. Add to that superior support and comfort, and they can take a beating from a hard working 250lb guy. I was in the meat business. Lots of blood (enzymes) lots of wet, lots of chemicals, lots of cold climate, lots of torque pushing and pulling heavy stuff-never split or nothing. If you want a great boot for outdoors that does all this and keeps your foot planted in the right way through it all-this is the brand and Sears carries the whole line-even hikers. Commercial over.

I agree with the thought that not one pair of boots will be good for every application. I have hiking boots, mountaineering boots, snowshoeing boots etc. What I do wear just about every day however is one of my three pairs of Blundstones. I have a pair of Classics in both brown (#500's) and black (#510's)...

And a pair of CSA work boots (#161's) for on duty.

I absolutely love how they feel, the ease of on and off and I've worn them doing everything from hiking to shovelling snow to attending weddings.
