Id be worried the axle is toast / compromised to the point where you wont have any good weldable material.

true, might make a bad problem worse burning a hole in a compromised axle, the $85 hoop mount seems a good option and its DIY able

Damn! I am so glad I don't live up in the northern area where rust is such a problem. That is horrible.

Too many questions in my head, on how the welder burnt through the thick axle?

Car-part.com. Narrow the search filters to Northeast. Expect to pay about $1000.

If I were faced with the same problem, I would fabricate a bracket out of either steel sheet or square tubing (i.e. cut it into a 3-sided box) and have it welded on at a repair shop (for example, shops that do mufflers and exhaust). Use the right-hand shock bracket as sizing reference.

Depends how much axle is left vs how much of that tube is made from compressed rust.

post #14 pic #2 https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/crazy-leak-from-the-rear-end-overnight.548948/ I remember su.brat had gotten a leak it looks like the installer may? have tack welded a few spots on the rear axle that resulted in a leak, on a late model Taco. don't know if the same effect would happen to a shock mount weld

Ok. I understand more by looking at that. Didn't get to see the front of the trac-bar, but it looks like however the bracket was welded on, plus the forces added to that bracket by the style of trac-bar.

You can use any shock if they are the correct length. I have seen it with longer billstein shocks. You can get a pair of resi kings for $6-$700 or a set of Billies for half that. Check on Ebay or with some vendors (some have deals on ebay too). DSM has a set of King 12" with Resi for awhile on ebay around $600. But as others mentioned you may want to just get a new or used axle.

I just relooked at the picture of the OPs axle that bad boy is pretty rusted out, not a welding expert but that thing looks compromised as far as how much heat or stress it could take, probably best have a welder shop at least look at it for a pro opinion, theres always plan B, the $85 shock mount hoop setup

I've run KYB on a couple of vehicles in the past, but not on the Tacoma. I never had any complaints. Advance Auto used to sell them when I worked there, I couldn't speak to whether they still carry them now. I only saw a few come back in over the years for issues, and typically user error at that.

Guys, thanks a million for the ideas and input. I have a deal worked out. Going to get another axle installed. Not going to go through the trouble of welding brackets on that axle and have something worse happen. Peace of mind with another axle. Will definitely have it all undercoated too.
And yes, up here it sucks with the salt and snow..
