I doubt it, especially if you go with the manual.

Do you regularly use your rear seats and trunk? If so, then maybe. I personally get a whole lot more use out of the bed and I never have to worry about sitting in the back seat of my own truck.

    I owned a V8 4Runner before my Tacoma, and I don't have any regrets

I have to agree a lot with this. The 2013 Tacoma I had was great, but the 2016 4Runner Trail Premium I have now is pretty killer.

I used my trailer a couple of times this week. Both times for stuff that would not have fit in the short bed of my old Tacoma.

Good looking 4R. We'll be getting the wife a '17 4runner TRD off road later this year.

    Amen!

Those front seats suck. My 2nd gen sees over 1k a week and I feel it.

If you need a truck bed, that's the only reason I see to buy the Tacoma over the 4Runner.

That said if it was just for me and my work I'd be in a new trd OR dcsb. But with a family the Tacoma was tight in the back

Great choice, can't agree more. The 3.5 is a horrible engine/trans combo in the new TACO. Should have kept the 4.0 from the 2 GEN. The Taco is so under powered vs the 4R. Comes down to simple economics; less cost for Toy. No wonder why the Taco is at the bottom of the list this year and the Honda Ridgeline was voted a Consumer Reports best buy.

I had the best of both worlds but the wifey couldn't handle driving my Tacoma after I claimed the 4R from her

A friend of mine is salesman so I had him throw some numbers around for shits. I'm a little shocked but they offered me $29k which exactly what I bought it for (different dealer) and will take $3500 off sticker on a SR5 4runner that's equipped with running boards and navigation.

Which one tows better? The 4R or Taco. I own a 2017 TRD OR and towing sucks. The 3.5 is underpowered.

I just had my truck stolen last week from the Montreal Airport area.

I'm waiting for a settlement and then move on/shop for a T4R Trail. The Trail comes with all the creature comforts and is pretty much ready for the trail after a lift (armor, KDSS, MTS, CC, locker). That saves a pile of money right there.

I'll get a beater full-size truck for chores and hauling the trailers around. I don't think that I could look at another Taco in the driveway. Four years of working on the Taco leaves me heartbroken. No more extensive builds for me.

Why is this thread in the 3rd gen section? Should I go make a post in every other section as to why I didn't pick that vehicle? Seems like OP needs validation. I say move it to the soccer mom section ... I mean 4runner section ;)

Having owned both a 2015 T4R and my current rig 2016 ORDC. Imo, both trucks lack power especially after adding any weight to them. The T4R seats were a bit more comfortable and rear suspension was nice but other than that I prefer the function and the versatility of the Tacoma. Having a bed to mount my RTT and not having to pack everything into the cabin of the T4R is nice. Both serve a purpose.012.jpg cl6.jpg

I like 4Runners (father in law has one that I end up driving a fair bit), but I still prefer my manual 3rd Gen. Granted, that means I don't have to deal with the auto trans issues I hear so much about. Turns out the manual is geared differently as well (compared speeds in gears with an auto and the manual revs higher at the same speeds, so generally more pep when you're driving it since its usually hovering around that 3k torque bump). Went on a TW meetup last weekend and wheeled with about 30 trucks, and the 3rd gens that were there did surprisingly well, especially considering they were both bone stock. That meet taught me (and a few others who made it a point to tell me that they were really impressed) to take the 3g hate with a grain of salt, they're really capable and I'm happy with my purchase.

Are the 4Runner Trails the same height as a TRD OR Tacoma, for example, before any suspension upgrades?

Awesome! Lucky you. I hope this is my garage one day. Except instead of the 3rd gen I'd just keep my 2nd gen Tacoma.
I have to admit that the 3rd gen Tacoma has really grown on me, especially with some of the mods I've seen on this forum.

Hoping to add a 4Runner Off Road (or certified Trail) soon after kids arrive. I'm always back and forth on considering trading in my current 2nd gen Tacoma for a 4Runner now. But having the truck bed has been useful enough where I keep thinking I'll regret not having it.
Lots of good reasons for both vehicles though, as others have stated here.

No validation needed just sharing my .02. I personally was quite disappointed when the 3rd gen released for the reasons I stated. C'mon Toyota still can't even put an adjustable seat on the drivers side atleast?! Even the original SR5 Toyota trucks had that as an option from 1984-95. Like I mentioned, I would have bought my 4th consecutive Tacoma (03', 06', 12') if they would have put the build & interior quality of the 4R into the 3rd gen.

I agree 100% that the Tacoma is more functional and versatile but not nearly as comfortable nor the power as the 4R. After driving several gen Tacomas for the past decade, I needed more comfort and interior space this time. After I test drove them both, it was an easy decision. Nice looking Quicksand btw. I'd be stoked to find that color in the 4R.
