I know this, but it’s still a crime what they’re asking for used cars...

The dealership where I was used to work was charging $2,900 over fair market value for a 2005 RAV4 last year!

Agree ... What I think is insane is someone buying a 8 year old vehicle for more than it cost 8 years ago !! LOL

And someone will finance it too...

My Tacoma was a gift from my parents back in September 2009; My dad traded a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder SE 4x4 with 113K miles on it for the Tacoma...

I’m guessing the dealer sold our Pathfinder for around $4K-$5K; I obtained the VIN from the window sticker that my dad still had and ran it through Carfax...

It turns out that my 13-year old, 113K-mile Pathfinder was repossessed about eight months after the second owner bought it! Who finances something that old?

The dealership can't force you to be a willing participant.

Actually They had a special that listed the new truck at UNDER 30K. Then I beat them down a few more K - then subtracted 12K for the trade in ... then subtracted the rebate and had them eat the xfer charge (truck was at another dealer) and had them add in a couple dealer added options ... (They could have given me more for the trade and less off the new truck ... ).

Aux back up lights, Bed lights, Re-located trailer plug, Good dooby, a.k.a. jumper cable mod, Heated seats, back up camera,
With fine or coarse sand mixed in.

In any event, a good deal is a frame of mind. He is happy with his truck and that is all that matters.

@Canufixit good luck with the new wheels. Come back and give a review sometime.

The only thing gained by trading was if they took the $12K off the sales tax price diff

Kinda. It’s sorta odd that we accept that a house should be worth more after 3 decades of wear and tear.

No way they will get close to $21K, more likely $14-16K. And if he sold it for that range, it would come close to being the same as the trade since you have to pay full sales tax vs the trade allowance. When I was looking for a reg cab 2 year ago, I found a 2014 with 9K original miles on it for $24K. I told them I would be interested in the $20K price range but they said no thanks. I found my 2013 and bought it. I looked several weeks later and that 2014 was now down to $18K so they obviously wanted to move it. Just because a vehicle has low mileage, that doesn't mean it's in mint condition. Reg cabs are not an easy sale for dealerships. OP, what dealer is the truck at now in case someone here is interested in it?
