Hey guys, I just ordered a motor form my '97 3rz from engineandtransmissionworld.com. The motor is used with 41k and has been cleaned up, compression and leak-down tested. I will be pulling my blown up one and installing the new one in a couple weeks, along with a DT header and a flex-fan from LCE.

Would you guys be interested in a full write-up for doing a motor swap for the 2.7l?

While I would not be against it personally because it would benefit someone, having to stop and take pictures and position everything is going to add some serious time to your swap. I recently documented the process of replacing carpet on a DC Tacoma, but honestly there are at least 60 pics/steps involved and the whole process was VERY time consuming. In the end it's up to you, I'm just not sure there are enough members swapping engines enough to make it worth your time. But don't let me sway you, just a heads up.

To make a long story short: Previous owner swapped the distributor engine into my truck which has a coil ignition. He jerry-rigged it enough to work but the timing was never quite right. Truck would misfire consistently while accelerating but was still drive-able. I was pulling a hill in third, well below red line and started hearing awful noises from the engine compartment. Pulled over and it sounded like valves making contact with pistons, or something making contact with cylinder head. The motor still runs but every time I fire it up it sounds worse than before, somethings gonna seize if I keep running it. I could possibly replace the head and make it work, but decided to just swap the correct motor into the pickup rather than have to worry about whatever else the jackass who owned it before me might have jerry rigged.

I didn't know about the engine swap when I bought the truck. It had an o2 sensor code and a camshaft position sensor code. Those sensors seemed like relatively easy fixes and the guy who sold it to me knocked $800 off for the codes. Should have taken it to a shop but got too excited and pulled the trigger before I knew all the details. Now I am dealing with the consequences.

well that sucks that the dude wasn't honest with you. best of luck. fyi i don't think these engine are interference engines so no valves could be slapping pistons
