Awesome find and great story. Head unit and backup camera, your rear bumper will thank you. Take care of the spots where the clear coat has cooked off.

I was going to mention the same thing or at least make sure it doesn't get to the point of rusting/pitting on those body panels.

Nice! I have the utmost respect for any young man or woman (esp in today’s world) that works hard to earn something. I did the same when I was 16 in 2000 and bought a Honda CRX with 185k miles on it. Major fistbump my friend. Approach everything else in life this way and you will not be disappointed.

Nothing wrong with that, just use the dash and wiring kits so you don't carve stuff up like 16 year old me did. Then throw the original radio on the shelf so you'll have it just in case.

Congrats! Beautiful truck. I always paid my own way with cars as well. I had 2 by the time I was 16- a 93 Mazda mx6 and 68 firebird project. I learned to drive stick on a truck that looked just like yours, but was a 4cyl 4x4 of 1997 vintage.

Do what you like, but I would keep it stock and CLEAN. Take care of that frame. Any 1st gen that clean is a diamond in the rough.

So I plan on modifying it but I plan on going the extra mile and spending lots of time so everything is done the best it can be. I want the mods to almost be like oem+ or something if you understand what I’m saying

Take your time, prioritize maintenance over mods and safety above all else. Remember you have a 20 year old truck, stuff is going to to be worn and things are going to break and you have to take care of them first. That said there are a lot of little things you can do that won’t break the bank. Here’s an $86 head unit that has USB input and Bluetooth, $30 camera and $15 Voltmeter/ dual port USB charger

Sounds good also thank you for the pics of the head unit I’ll probably do something similar. I’ll prob post on Tacoma world whatever I do to the truck just as like a log book.

I got mine last year when I was 15 (working with what I can to get it paid off) and I must say, seriously great investment. It'll never let you down and it's a great platform to enjoy driving and have fun modding. Take care of it and it will take care of you!
Also 2nd on that head unit, I have a bluetooth one and it's super convenient.
