Considering a lot of owners have $5k+ of upgrades and won’t get that back if the truck gets totaled because of frame damage that couldve possibly have been avoided, we are saving OURSELVES OUR money

If your truck gets totaled you can take most of your upgrades back.

But for arguments sake that’s a little extreme. This bumper isn’t going to save you from getting totaled. It might save you from a bumper replacement.

I look at the sparebumper as prevention, similar to adding skids, sliders and waxing/sealing your paint etc.

Also having been in some near misses makes my decision easier.

True, but only if you or someone and the vehicle is made available to remove/retrieve those upgrades.

Just do it before they take it. Until they cut you a check it’s still your truck. And if they aren’t paying you for the value of said items, you have every right to be given access to recover those items.

    Most $$$ from $5000+ vs $135?
If it saves me from a bunch of headache from a 35mph hit to the rear?
Heck if it saves me from half a day getting estimates and another day for repairs from a 5,10 or 15mph hit, that’s worth it for me

You’re kinda missing the point here. This thing will not save your truck from a totaling accident. I’ll give you the fact that it might save some headaches if you are hit perfectly straight at less than 5mph.

My biggest argument was that in anything above that you are now sacrificing your crumple zones and transmitting a large portion of that force into your frame and increasing the likelihood of injury to occupants.

Not according to sparebumper's website and attorney.

    https://sparebumper.com/?act=viewProd&productId=106&catId=26

"This patented crash certified attenuator reduces damage and the risk of whiplash by softening the “crash pulse”."

They do seem to have the data to backup their claims.

I didn’t see any actual data or crash test results. There was a ton of anecdotal information spouted out on your link but nothing showing actual test results. One of their biggest points was that your insurance was going to accuse you of lying and you’ll have to sue them. That whole thing was scare tactic marketing. Which works great on lots of people.

You can do whatever you want and I hope it works for you. I personally am going to put my faith in the billions of dollars spent on certified crash tests. If it were as simple as they make it sound do you really think vehicle manufacturers wouldn’t have caught on by now?

I was not certain on data but they do have this useful info, no. 4:

"4) Are all vehicle classes required to meet the Federal bumper standard?

No. The Federal bumper standard does not apply to sport utility vehicles (SUVs), minivans, or pickups trucks; only passenger cars."

    https://sparebumper.com/federal-bumper-standards/

Thats good enough info for me.

That all seems to pertain to very low speed impacts. Which I agreed this hitch bumper will probably do well with if they are straight on.

But a minute ago you guys were comparing a $130 part and the cost of losing your modifications on a totaled truck. Pick a lane.

Recovering upgrades is only one factor. And I clearly stated I want a sparebumper for low impact hits.

The pluses outweigh the negatives, $150 is cheap insurance against a low impact hit.

    Game over Bro!

    Wow just wow
I didn’t expect it to be so controversial. Like people are even invoking the dictionary on me to discuss semantics (keep it in the slow lane buddy). I think it’s great people have so many diverse opinions.

My thought is that it does not stick out as far as it seems, at least no worse than a common footstep. The magnum plate is significantly better looking than the tube version (imo) and has plenty of space for some obnoxious decals. How does “Don’t text and Drive!” sound? It’s also a bit condescending especially if that’s what they were doing.

Someone called it a damage multiplier and that’s exactly what I expect will happen to whoever runs into it.

Obviously if something does happen I will upload pictures, probably before I even send them to the insurance. I will also give you and the manufacturer an honest assessment of its performance. The only bias I have here is Pro-Tacoma.

So I did a little more looking at the actual construction of this bumper. It appears there is an internal sleeve that slides if it gets hit hard. So I will take back my statements that it will make things worse in a major rear collision. I still think that anything over 15 mph isn’t going to see a major benefit but it’s not making anything worse like I originally thought.

However people using it in this configuration I still believe are making things far worse in higher speed impacts than not having anything at all.

I’ve never heard of that being illegal in California. Heck I have a tow vehicle with a none removable hitch bolted on. Drive with it for 12 years.

I’ve heard this rumor but never seen evidence of it in the vehicle code nor had it confirmed with any of the LEOs I’ve worked with. It seems like a gray area because the left-on interface interferes with the bumper’s crash-mitigation qualities (which is mandated in the CVC), but it’s probably just one of those things people keep repeating without evidence.

That was with my stock bumper and stock hitch with nothing in place. The OEM hitch is super strong.
