Again, get one that fits you and that you like. Try different ones once you settle on a bow. I shoot a very old Scott Caliper release. I have tried may others to upgrade but I always put them back and keep the old one.

i'm down to hunt with you.

releases? here is my take. whatever you chose right at the beginning, will be the one you compare all releases to from then on. i use a tornado by truball. i love wrist strap releases. and i love them to have both jaws move, versus one..the truball does it all.

but, it has a velcro strap which is loud, and i could get different tightness from time to time. if i had to start over..go with the buckle strap.

i found out the tornado was getting discontinued..i panicked. i ran around and found another. a spare is huge. i tried a different release, but it moved my POI. it was frustrating.

check out the website hunters friend.com
    http://www.huntersfriend.com/
they have some killer deals on there. All there prices include shipping, they come with a case, arrows of your choice, release(really an release will do, some people disagree but its not a huge factor imo) and the biggest thing is that it comes already paper tuned and tuned to your specs. I was more than happy with their service.

I wouldn't go through online. Pro shops will either charge u and arm n a leg to set it up and tune for you if they even are willing to. If you know how to paper tune. Have a press and know what your doing, then ya, other wise, not worth it.

Edit: didn't read your entire post, but still sketched about that. Even if they do all that, something goes wrong, the pro shop will still charge u for tune ups, so forth where as most of u buy from them they are more then willing to help and get things right free of charge.

Thanks for the info, I figure I should buy a release so that will stay constant and the only difference will be the bows when I go and shoot to see what I want.

I am going to check the website out tonight! thanks for the info and once I get my bow you down to go to the range or anything?

I think I would buy a bow through a store unless I was absolutely set on getting something that was out of stock from a shop and found it for sale online.

Looking into some other bows as well other then the major brand names. A member on here mentioned Elite Bows and Athens Bows. Looked at them earlier today and they seem really nice! anyone here anything about those two types?

l looked at the PSE Stinger 3g and the Bowtech Assassin. I really liked the Assassin but it was a bit more than the Brute X and by the time you add up everything arrows, target, release and bow package the Brute X was already pushing my budget. And to be honest I couldnt tell a difference between the Assassin and the Brute X.

I'm using a trueball release, I like the release part but the strap is not that comfortable, I'm hoping it will break in and get there with time.

I use a Tru-Fire foldback release. I like it because you can strap on the release and foldback the trigger portion of the release when you aren't shooting. This is great for when you are pulling arrows out of a target, or when hunting I can put the release on before I head into the woods, fold it back and it stays out of the way until I need it.

I have had no issues or problems with my release. Its a spring loaded design, so when folded forward or back it stays in place. I strap it on before I hop on the 4wheeler and head out.

Athens I've heard is nice. Never seen one. And elite is awesome. My buddy is a dealer. Prob me the one who mentioned it. Prob going to be my next bow.

Little story behind elite, supposedly they were making all bows, from beginner cheap, to mid line and then high end. They finally said fuck it, (prpb profit and sales issues) and said lets just focus on a few high end designs, and only that. I think they nailed it.

Like I said, they pump great speed, and are the smoothest quietest bow I have shot.

Where did you take your safety class and did you take the one for bowhunting?? Any chance you know how long I would have until I have to apply for early deer tags??

Agreed with one of the best things so far! Safety first in my book.

Yeah, my GF dad shoots an Elite and he loves it! cannot find anywhere out in California that sells either one of those brands unfortunately.. Any ideas on how to get my hands on one and try out either the Athens or Elites??

its just the general hunters safety class required to get a hunting license, they after you get the class done you can go into any big 5 or sport chalet and purchase the tags. The only ones you really need to apply for are elk, sheep, and some deer locations. In the hunters safety they talk a little about archery but not much, its mostly rifles, and the state laws. July 1st is the start of the new hunting year.
