I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
I use to be a big archery nut but kinda fell out of it years ago. I finally bought myself another bow and im getting back into it man how they have changed.

Just seeing if there are any norcal guys into it. I'll be doing some shoots around the bay one of them will be on the 18th.

I started this thread for local guys to bs about the sport maybe set up a few range days.

My goals for 2015 is a Turkey in the spring a hog some time this year and a buck this fall. Im also putting for a limited entry Bull in Utah but i dont expect that tag for years!

Here is a link to the 2015 events in CA I'll be hitting up quite a few if anyone is intersted. http://www.cbhsaa.net/2015CBHSAA.pdf

Father in law is way into it too. Hit him up because he's been going the last few weekends. His set ups are pretty tricked out too (bow and crossbow)

i'm a bowhunting freak!! my poor wife feels like she comes in a distant second. not true.

but i do love bowhunting. i actually gave up on all my rifles. it just seems to easy by comparision.

right now, there is a "free" hog hunt going on. public land, well actually Army Corp of Eng, land. Lake sonoma. you have to pay $35 for a permit, but it is good until they close the season. which is somewhere near the third weekend of march. LOTS of pigs. but they are very nomadic, and dont stay with any set pattern due to the hunting pressure. killing one, (ive hit 2, but not killed them..both a friend killed a week later :() is about as huge as taking a bull elk anywhere on the planet. just as challenging.

i just got back from an asia vacation but i am about to start hitting the lake again. i like ditching work during the week to hunt them, since it is less crowded.

what bow did you get? gear? i LOVE shooting at the range in the Briones park. some long shots, not very crowded. there is a good walk from the truck to the range. members get a gate key and can drive right up.

turkey? i hunt private land, and the owner ONLY lets me bring my younger brother.

maybe we can go poke around the lake someday. it is a really good time.

I've been wanting to get a recurve, but I have never done to much with bows so I still really have no idea what I'm doing yet. Maybe I'll learn more from reading what you guys talk about.

I had the day off with the kid today so i figured why not take him for a little hike and shoot at Briones for a little wile. We were the only ones there so that helped not having to keep him in the back pack wile shooting.

My groups are getting tighter it was a little windy but they are getting tighter. 20 yards im about the same at 30 yards as well. I still need to fine tune the sights a little more ill go back out next weekend without the kid.

I used to be able to get groups like that with a 20lbs recurve at 30 yards, similar concept to shooting 3-pointers.

    lol.

My brother does a lot of recurve hunting. He brought home an 8 point buck this winter. If memory serves correct, he is using a 60 pound draw weight, 6 foot longbow. My bow is a compound, with a 65 pound draw, and a 70% let-off.

I just picked up a new rest for the bow that dam G5 halo is already messing up my fletches and it think it was causing accuracy issues. I picked up a Quality Archery Products HDX along with some Montec broadheads. Im going to hit up lake Sonoma on the 18th with MJonAgs32 father in law and hopfully take a shot on a pig.

    cool!!
i shoot montecs as well. you HAVE to sharpen them first. i personally dont think they are as sharp as they need to be right out of the box. but they fly awesome for me, so that hides a lot of the dullness-sins for me. makes it forgivable at least. if you google, sharpening Snuffer SS (basically the same head), i use that method.

and the LAke. you have to get the permit before you go. that bowshop in petaluma sells them, and will save you an hour drive. it sucks to have to show up late in the morning to buy the permit on the day you want to hunt. those hogs are very nocturnal. so getting there and waiting for the lake's office to open up, the hogs will be hiding/sleeping by the time you get cracking.

i'd love to go, but i will be in AZ on the 18th..chasing Couse deer!!

that QAD rest is very good. shot one for years. make sure you get the timing right. pretty easy with those two white tick marks.

now i shoot a "limb driven" rest. it's basically backwards from your rest. your rest has a slack cable normally. you draw the bow, the cable tightens and the rest loads up and drops when the cable goes slack again.

my cable is tight at rest and the rest loads up when the cables get slack. then drop away when the cable goes tight again. i dont have timing issues and no torque put into the cables at full draw.

    both systems rock!!

    good luck on the hogs.

I picked up a pse brute x last year hoping to get into hunting. I didn't have time this year to go out and practice. There's a range close by my place, but its not as fun going by myself to practice.
