Different? - yes. Stock? - definitely not.
It was also done very poorly.

Good point, drive throughs would not be too fun either.

I kept the most I could of the spring clamps. Leaf shifting has not been an issue for me. Really depends on budget or quality for the vision of your truck.

Thanks for the pic @YumaTRD . I'll take a look at it again and see what I can come up with.

tell me more about your square driveshaft. I'm gonna need a long travel front shaft and I've known about the square ones for a long time but never really considered it for anything but a dedicated trail rig. Is it driveable in 4wd on the road, or just too much vibration?

Redoing the front was a good learning experience. My old leafs were shot so I picked up some toyota rear leafs to swap them. It ended up needing new shackles, break lines, shock mounts, shocks, steering arm (temporary until highsteer) and fabricating a squat drive shaft.

With the manual hubs, the front drive does not turn so it's not noticeable. If hubs are locked and in 2 hi, then it does rattle when spinning. In 4 hi, it does not rattle when Load is applied, but rattles when coasting.

I have a lunch box locker in the rear so I'm used to clicking sounds. The square shaft will get you by on a budget.

Gotcha. About what I expected. I'll end up having a true long travel driveshaft built. Now just need to figure out if we're going to do dual cases or just 4.7's in the single case.

So you're still using the stock "push-pull" steering? How's your bumpsteer? the bumpsteer in this truck is ridiculous. Party, I'm sure, because it has manual steering. But also because the lift is way too tall for what the stock steering can handle and still behave well.

Why not a 4speed Atlus? They're stronger by far and you'll have the option of getting digs.

Sub'd. Be a nice before/after for lifts. First pic, idiot looky-lift. Last pic, your build and somebody who knows what they are doing lift. Should be nice and educational. Much love for the Hi Lux...

An Atlas is cool, but totally unnecessary and is a wasted expense IMO. On a competition buggy or high horsepower rock racer, then definitely. The 22R will never build enough power to damage a Toyota case. When I had a dual ultimate crawler in my '93 pickup (223:1 final drive) I was sold on them. Not only the awesome gearing but I like to use Toyota parts whenever possible and this allows that with the exception of the actual 4.7 gearset and adapter.

Gotcha! The gearing reduction is killer either way you go!

The truck drives strait on the free way, but have gotten death wobble at the 35mph range.
Looks like I'm lucking out and picking up a used All-pro hysteer for $150 today.
The square drive shaft and stock steering are temporary mods that were done to keep the truck usable. I do feel them as weak links in my build but items that can be replaced at a later time as funds are available.

Dude that thing is ultra clean for a 1980. No way I would chop it. They get nice, candy-ass winters in Seattle too, I bet it barely has any rust on it...
