x2 Besides, you should have dropped the mag before clearing the chamber, regardless.

Always check the mag then the chamber when you are handed a gun, both for maintenance (ensure unloaded) and for action (ensure loaded).

I am aware it was a terribly stupid event. Thanks to those pointing out the obvious.

I read about guns firing ALL the time regardless of the training of the person holding the weapon. It was pointed in a safe direction (the floor) hence no one getting hurt.

I AM NOT excusing this action. I am a HUGE gun advocate, hence him showing me his pistol, and it did not have a locking safety like a 1911 style pistol.

Again, this DOES NOT excuse what happened. None of my SIGs have a locking safety and this has never happened to me.

Here's a pic of where it went in. It exited the undercarriage in a place I can barely see and can't get a pic of. It's gonna be a nightmare trying to curl my arm up in there to patch it up.

IBTL. pretty sure unless it was loaded with flying ashtrays, a 45 would penetrate the cast aluminum tranny

It exited above the transfer case. Lucky that it somehow either deflected off the case with no mark made or just missed it as a result of going through the sheet metal. Either way, everyone is safe which is what matters most to me.

In the ground below the truck. It was barely stuck in the dirt/grass.

If and when I replace the plastic I will take some pics. I am going to clean and prep the area underneath as best I can (as I mentioned it's way up in there) and smear some RTV silicone over it. I have been parking over dry spaces at night, driving in 4wd before parking to ensure the shafts are spinning in the event there IS a hole or crack etc. I cannot see and that the fluid is not escaping and dripping off the tunnel as it sits.

I have a buddy with a lift. We are gonna try to put it up for the repair etc. when he has some free time at the shop.

Your not the first to do this & you probably want be the last.

I'm surprised none of my friends have shot a hole in their vehicle.

I do know someone who shot a hole thru the roof in their apartment while in college. One roommate went into anothers room & opened the closet door. A shotgun feel out & hit the door handle & fired a slug thru the roof. My friend isn't a gun person at all & said he just sat on the floor scared to death. He has no clue how it missed him. I'm sure this would scare the shit out of anybody. My other friend had been deer hunting & left his gun loaded.

This happened over a weekend & they called me to come over to see when i returned back to school. Lucky they lived on the top floor & nobody was injured.

Guns dont just go off somehow. A hand was on the gun and that hand belonged to a careless oaf who shouldnt be around guns. Glad you lived and props to the tough Taco.

As a NRA pistol instructor, I can clear this up for you. The pistol went off for three reasons:

    1) It had a round in the chamber.
    2) Your "apt" brother in law had the safety off (or the pistol didn't have a safety).
    3) Your "apt" brother in law inserted something (his finger???) into the trigger housing and pulled the trigger.

I had a family friend killed by an "apt" buddy who thought the gun was unloaded. The gun started to slip out of his hand and he grabbed it, pulling the trigger in the process and shooting my friend in the chest. The friend was a combat seasoned JTAC and an expert on firearms. That expertise didn't save him when his "apt" buddy mishandled the pistol.

I recommend you stay far away from your brother in law anytime he has a firearm nearby....it may just save your life!

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Some guns can discharge unexpectedly. Is it an older 45? I am not much of a expert on guns, but my old man had an old special edition 44 mag and we were cleaning out the gun-safe one night and had everything laid out. He picks it up off the pool table and gets ready to inspect something on it and it goes off, didn't even have his finger on the trigger or anywhere near it. Bounced off the slate on the pool table and went through the sheetrock on the ceiling. He was in the Army Infantry for 4 years and is very disciplined in handling all types of weapons, some things just happen and there is no stopping it. Glad you are okay!

This is why we need stronger gun laws. Less Tacoma's would be hurt and full of holes if guns were harder to get. </sarcasm>

Aww come on guys, you mean you have never pulled your service weapon only to have it go off on accident killing a suspected perp?

Haha, totally just kidding of course.

But I agree, the gun handler wasnt so savvy with gun safety.. I have never discharged a weapon unintentionally. Nor do I plan on it ever!
