    back to bone stock.
my elderly stepdad blasted a 12g hole in the bottom of my brother's duramax.

we jumped out to chase quail. shot a few, and came back to the truck to find my stepdad still sitting inside. sheepish look on his face. i jumped in and immediately noticed a cloud of pinkish/gray fiber floating around in the air. we blew it off and finally drove home. unloading the truck we saw the hole. my brother asked and he said, he thought it went off. thank goodness he didnt kill himself.

he was under serious chemo therapy drugs. my brother didnt love the situation. a buddy welded the hole and resealed everything. i was stunned my stepdad didnt fess up. it had to have blown out his ears.

after that, we treated him like a kid. over and under shotguns only and we made him break open the action. the clear visual of him having a safe gun was a godsend. hunting was his passion. we wanted him to hunt up to the end. i had to point out passing ducks to him. he would miss them by a mile. it was sad..but we kept taking him out. in the end, i went gunless..so i could keep an eye on him.

A bullet can bounce in erratic angles when striking vehicle sheetmetal. Example of a Hyundai recently posted on Reddit:

And we know the Tacoma can take a bullet. This speedway blue example took over 100 rounds and kept its two passengers alive. :p

It's referred to as a slam fire and happens more than people want to discuss. A simple Google search will show tons of stories of this happening. This particular pistol was a Springfield XD. I tried to avoid the specifics to keep the gun out of it. In fact, search for slam fires with the XD in particular and you will find all sorts of stories.

    How the event occurred:
I was handed a gun to look at outside of the car. We got in and were discussing pistols, music etc. for a few minutes. Out of habit, I cleared the gun and handed it to him with the mag out of it. He put the mag in and was racking it. The gun went off. He had it pointed at the floor when it happened. Why was he chambering a round? Because there's no point in concealed carry if the gun doesn't have one in the pipe (up for debate as that's an opinion). I do realize how stupid this sounds but again, it happens a lot more than you read about or hear about. Why? Because most people keep it to themselves as it immediately discredits their gun "expertise." I have never had this happen to me. I have had some pistols double fire on me before but none that I owned.

I am glad all parties involved are safe. I don't take offense to the remarks because I was not the one handling the pistol. I also do not see the point in making reductionist comments such as calling someone a "tard." In fact I find that remarks like that point out how simple-minded those who make them are. It's cool though, I enjoy making demeaning remarks at the expense of the mentally challenged. [sarcasm]

Anyway, for the rest of the crowd, here's what the bullet looks like...

My uncle's ex wife shot a hole through the floorboard of his '94 Toyota pickup, grazing the transmission. The truck was fine.

Is she an ex wife because of her shooting the truck or did she shoot the truck because she is an ex wife?

i have a relative who did the same thing. him and his friend got done hunting and he had the shotgun still loaded between his legs with the barrel in the floorboard. he fingerfucked the trigger somehow and the gun went off. blew buckshot through the floorboard, bounced off the asphalt, went up, and completely destroyed the engine.

UMM, not true about ..."happens more than people like to discuss" that part is absolutely untruthful. Its a self enabling borrowed excuse. Yes, they do happen, and when you do I bet you hear about EVERY last one repeatedly.

35 years around firearms, including a Springfield armory M1A and I have never seen a slam fire, no one I have shot with or hunted with has either. I cant speak of XD's, my 45 is a 1911 style.

I also suspect they happen LESS than they really do, but they make a great excuse... sort of like a stuck throttle we've heard of.

All that doesn't mean it wasn't a slam fire. I'm saying It sounds out of place for the situation.

Agreed, and its very easy for a self proclaimed "apt" firearm guy to try and shed the blame by calling it a "slam fire". Especially when the only other witnessing party may not be as knowledgeable about firearms as the "apt" person in the first place. Just saying....

Just googled Springfield XD slam-fire, no concrete information.

Some rifles with free-floating firing pins like the SKS will slam-fire if heavily fouled (i.e. firing pin stuck in protruding position). Some military rifles were designed for military ammo with harder primers. Never came across anything about pistols slam-firing.

If you handle guns enough and for long enough you will have an unintended discharge at some point. That's just the odds.
