I'm trying to determine if this coil torsion spring Has a broken leg. It is part of the Parking brake bell crank lever under the truck that should be held taught but is loose and causing my Brake light to come on. I'm thinking it does have a broken leg since it spins inside the chamber. I can not find any other way for this to work except for those two legs to be opposing one another and they can't do that as it is now. Just wondering if anyone might have seen one recently and can confirm that the leg is broke and should be longer. It has a slight rough face to it and appears to have rusted at the point of breakage. Another question. Are they all the same for all years or is the 1999 different. I see the spring offered but specific too years. Just thought I'd ask.

    Thanks,

    Lou

yeah it's definitely missing the other leg that holds tension, time for a new one

I'm thinking they should all be the same as the mechanism is identical for all 95-04?

    Hi,

Thanks, you confirmed what I suspected. I'll order a new one. Then I can tighten that whole assembly up. I just bought this so I'm trying to get all the bugs out of it. Last owner apparently did not want to be bothered. The Parking Brake cables are all loosy Goosy.

If you live in the Winter Chemical area it does not hurt to spray some lube on the spring every oil change.

nice truck, I've always wanted an 01-04 2.4 5spd single cab to run around with, just not in the budget for now.

surprisingly mine is still OK being here. then again I sprayed used oil on the complete undercarriage every year so that probably helped

Well, I just got the new spring and guess what, they're exactly the same. So it's not the spring, it's the guy trying to make it work that's the problem.

If there's anyone out there that has a diagram or a photo of how that spring is installed it might help me figure out what if anything is missing. Anyway, I guess I'll crawl under there and stare at it for a while.

    Thanks

Here's what mine looks like, one of the few remaining crusty bits on my truck. The long arm fits behind the lever, and it's hard to see where the other side of the spring goes, but it should be obvious if you get the long arm situated correctly. I don't see a long arm on your spring, so perhaps the design was changed at some point.

Hi, Excellent photos. Thanks for going to all the trouble to take them. I don't get it. I went back under there put the spring in as it should be and what do ya know , it works. Have no idea what I was doing wrong the first go around. Easy peasy. Funny thing is I was trying to bend that strange clip used and it bounced out of my pliers so fast I have no idea where it went but I was not about to spend the next hour trying to find it so I used a cotter pin. Here's a shot. Now everything is all snugged up. That clip will turn up in about a year I suspect. Thanks !!
