Fuck it. It's a truck. They're supposed to make noises.

Complaints like this (and more people buying them to be used as cars than trucks) are why trucks are BECOMING cars.

The Tacoma is close enough to being a 4x4 Camry as it is. Let's not give Toyota any justification to take it further.

most people hear it more when going to stop forward the firts time after reversing....its not pads its actully the calipers shifting on the pins.....toyota tried fixing it yrs ago but its just the way the system is set up.....greasing the pins and also light never-seize coating where the edge of the caliper and caliper bracket meet is bout the best fix.....only problem is with heavy rain or after washing the noise will come back....cause no damage at all just noisy......i worked for toyota for yrs but lefted...

I have the same condition. I'll be replacing my brakes in January so I'll look for a solution at that time.

Just take the wheel off, clean the dirt and shit off the caliper and make sure the pins are free of dirt. Apply some grease to the pins and reassemble. I only had this problem once, and a general cleanup fixed it.

Dont see why you couldnt add a couple 50 cent springs to avoid the clicking . Next time I have the tires off ,I will try something and post pictures . Seems like an easy fix.

Use disc break quiet with your new break pad install .

    Huh,

I always was curious if my truck had an issue that would mean taking it in to the dealer.

    But,,,

No, just need to take care of it when the front brakes are replaced?

    Big thanks to JBCjr http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/member.php?u=89421

JBCjr beet me to a possible fix and came up with some springs that apparently take care of that nasty clunk we all get as our brake pads age . He sent me some pics to post .
You got a part # ? I want some of these bad !!!!

With this said , the additional spring will fix a click sound on a slightly worn brake pad and is a cheap fix to keep the noise to a minimum . Use the brake quiet stuff I have listed above or similar to lube and seat your old brake pads . Just adding the spring without any additional maintenance to the brake pads may not help on a trashed set of pads . When I say trashed , your brake lining may be fine but metal to metal wear points may be above tolerance. The additional spring is not a miracle cure . the additional spring assists the break pads from rocking on the stop pins . Inspect your brake pads closely . The pins are also known to wear over time .When you remove the brake pins , make sure they are the same size all the way through the length of the pin .All it takes is a little movement on an old set of pads and its going to clack or clunk . You are stopping a 4000 pound truck with the front brakes every time you come to a stop .If you dont regularly use your emergency brake which keeps your rear brake shoes adjusted , you are going to wear your front brake pads prematurely . The play in the front pads and hardware will be minimal and difficult to see but it will clunk and clank under load .

I have the part number posted above, they are the stock Toyota springs you are just adding one to the top of the pads.

My 4runner does it, not a big deal though because I've had a few different cars that made the same noise. a honda accord, an eagle talon and a mitsubishi eclispe. I think my dodge dakota did it too before I changed the pads. I figure when I do the brakes on my 4runner it will go away.

I also had bad break problems with a honda civic. had to clean them every 5k miles or they would sound like an unbalanced tire when you depressed them. only had that car about 2 years.

Alloutdrs1, I replaced my original oem;s breaks last December, with Porterfield pads and the calipers didn't look right with just a bottom spring clip. I don't recall the price. I'll be rotating my tires this week and get a pic of the pads for wear, Thanks gearchruncher for your help with posting pictures

Glad I could help and thanks for this :)
I get some weird looks from people when i hit my brakes .Very noticeable when the windows are down .
If this actually fixes the noise , Im gonna be a happy camper . I had a different approach to fixing this problem . The issue looks to be resolved by simply re-lubricating the caliper stops and mounting points but I can sure see where the extra spring you guys added come into play and its an easy fix worthy of a sticky thread .

Has anyone got any feed back if the extra spring worked? I'm having to replace a wheel bearing and if this works I plan on picking one up.

I added the spring to mine and it solved my issue, mine were making the noise over big bumps as well and that has also ceased with the addition of the spring. It should have two from the factory IMO.

I've started to grow fond of that 'clack' . . glad I found this, nonetheless. Thanks again, TW.

I didnt read though to see if anyone suggest this already, but I use some rubber cement type of stuff that CRC has or had for brakes, our parts department cant seem to find it anymore, but anyway use that between the pads and the shims, ive had to completly stop the click/rattle or quiet at least quite it down dramatically. It used to come in either a liquid with brush form, or a small spray can. Hope this helps. We used to get it from o'reilly's
