I have an '11 off road that I bought new. It has about 75k miles. The truck has been in service since 9/10. I never had a brake fluid exchange done during the 11 years I have had it. Over the past few months I noted that the brakes seemed "mushy, or soft" and that it took more pedal force to stop the truck.
I had a local shop change out the brake fluid. It cost about $ 110 including fluid. I have to say it has made a great difference in brake feel and stopping power. It was really worth the money. I don't have that "special" Toyota ABS flush tool so that is why I had the shop do the work.
I know that brake fluid is supposed to be changed out every 2 years, but until recently I never thought it was necessary. Where I live (NH)we have had a very rainy & humid summer, much beyond normal. Maybe the extra moisture was able to mix with the brake fluid, but I don't know
Bottom line, money well spent. They also checked pads/rotors/etc. and all was good.

Good on you to get it changed, nobody really pays much attention to the brake fluid as far as I can tell it's one of those fluids that easily overlooked. $110 is a little steep for $15 worth of fluid and about a half hour of time, but I guess a shop gotta make some money.

I may have to get this done too. My brakes on my ‘06 have been getting a bit mushy too. Pads are good and rear shoes and hardware were replaced in the past 6 months so I think a fluid flush would do it well.
