My daughter called today telling me her 4Runner is in need of a $600+ brake job.
She sent me a picture of the quote showing new rotors and pads at 290 and new calipers at 360, both prices installed.
    The car has 106k miles.
I called the mechanic and he said the pistons are rusted and dragging causing the brakes to heat up.
He also said it doesn't pay to turn the rotors anymore, better to just replace.

Does this sound legit to you guys?

The comment about not turning the rotors sounds OK. With the high cost of labor (and an expensive machine to do the turning), turning one costs almost as much, if not more, than a new one. I'd replace them if they were warped or badly scored. My concern would be whether they need to be replaced at all.

Calipers need only be replaced (or re-built) when they leak, stick, or seize-up. In the last 30 years, I've only needed to replace 2 calipers in all my vehicles.

Unfortunately, many mechanics tend to 'oversell' services when a female drives into the shop.
Why did she go to the shop in the first place?

Ask your daughter if she has any issues when applying the brakes.
    - pulsing brake pedal
    - squealing sound
    - pulling to left or right
    - not slowing down as good as it should

If none of the above are true, then at the worst, the pads might be getting thin and just needs new pads and thats all.

I wouldn't worry about leaky front CV boot. It won't leave her stranded. Just leave it out of 4wd.

She ended up having the work done. All total almost 900 with the new boot.

She said the brakes felt much better, and I feel better knowing she's safe. She really loves that truck, hopefully it will serve her well.

Of course I put some money in her account. She's a good kid.

To each there own without being there in person who can tell

ADD yes a failed CV axle will leave you sit

About the brakes I don`t know anyone that turns Rotors any more just replace.

Calipers I guess it depends where one lives.

Here in the Great Brine Belt Calipers Rotors and Pads when it needs pads but that is me.
