Hey all just purchased a 2014 tacoma. Brake light is on in the dash. I've been reading in other forums but here's something unique. The brake light in the dash goes off when I turn on the running lights. I've been going through the wiring and can't figure this one out.

This also arised after I installed a backup camera by splicing into the reverse light (which works). Don't know if this was coincidental or not. I did remove everything I installed but still am having the brake light on the dash. (It still goes off when I turn on the running lights). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Picture below shows how I spliced into it.

And I'm an idiot. Things work better when you plug in the adapter to the other correct one.

Welcome to TW, and good work solving your first posted problem on your own!

For what it's worth, those clamp-on wire splices are notoriously problematic, and are an especially poor choice in this location, where they are going to get blasted with road spray whenever you drive through rain or puddles. I'm can't say for certain that they'll fail, but using them here is a recipe for failure. You may well wind up with intermittent connections and corroded/broken wires, especially if you live somewhere where it snows.

I would recommend using better wiring techniques, such as solder/heatshrink, or properly crimped weatherproof connectors. Unlike vampire splices, these techniques require a small investment in proper tools and a bit of knowledge/technique, but this is actually a benefit, not a drawback... learning to do things right is easy and will pay dividends in the long run.

I don't mean this as criticism, just trying to be helpful. I would be happy to elaborate on better wiring techniques if you are interested. Again, good work, and welcome to TW!

I recently had water in a tail light.
Seal the holes to help block water/dirt.

Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely switch out out the connectors. Thanks all for the feedback.
