I bought a new camper top for my Tacoma today and set about wiring in the third brake light. Tied into the drive side tail light and connected the black/red canopy wires to the wires coming out of the brakelight. I had some successes and failures..

    1) Hooked up wires and third brake light came on (success!). Tested the brake and the L/R brake lights lit up but the third brake light turned off. (failure)
    2) Rearranged connections and third brake light came on (success!). Tested the brake and the L/R brake lights lit up bright but the third brake light didn't turn off or get brighter. (failure)
    3) Rearranged some more and couldn't get any more outcomes. Decided to settle for option #2 until I got more insight... and now brake lights L/R don't work. All three lights come on but none of them react to me hitting the brakes at all.

Found this forum and I think what might have happened is I shorted something out while swapping wires around. As far as I can tell there isn't a fuse specific to when the brake is applied.. so what'd I break?

First disconnect what you already have done. Next replace your brake light fuse (I believe it is in the fusebox by your left knee behind the compartment). Now hook it up the right way. The third brake light(high) should only come on with the brake lights and not with tail lights or parking lights. If you use a short piece of broomstick to prop between the brake pedal and the seat to turn on the brake lights then with a multimeter it will be easy to figure out which wires to hook up to. I hope this helps you out.
