I have a 2013 Tacoma and I have a problem with the brake locking up after a stop. I am pretty sure that it is the rear brakes. This happens only about once every 6 to 8 weeks. If I stop at a stop light when I start out the brake is locked up and I cannot drive forward. I can reverse a few feet and the brake releases and things are back to normal for the next several weeks. Both front and rear brakes have been completely replaced including the emergency brake cables and related parts. I brought it to a mechanic and I told him that I thought that it was the rear brakes but he thought that it was the front brakes so he replaced everything in the front but I still had the problem so he replace everything on the rear brakes. I do not drive very much so the truck will frequently not be driven for several days but the problem is not consistent.

If it’s the rear brakes the back of the truck will go up a bit when you back up. If it’s the front brakes the front will either skid or squat down a bit when you back up. I would start with the back brakes they are probably the culprit.

Maybe look at your parking brake cable adjustment.

The parking cables tend to bind after many years.

Check the parking brake cable housing into the backing plate for the rear drums. Most 2nd gens have issues there now.

Had anyone taken the drums off and looked at the brakes yet?

They might be way out of adjustment and full of brake dust. Look for broken hardware. Or maybe the axle seal is leaking into the drum and the shoes are sticky.
