So, everything was hunky doory before the axle replace?

Yeah, I wouldn't buy "bad master cylinder" for a second.

My Haynes shop guide says be careful when opening up the brake system to air. If air gets into the master cylinder, it must be bled by the dealer using special equipment.

That may be what has happened here.

This is what i was thinking, but yesterday i noticed that small amounts of brake fluid are dripping where the master cylinder bolts up, so now i think they may be right, but i'm still pretty unsure.

If it leaks where it meets the booster, then brake fluid will be going into the intake and burning in the engine. Get it fixed quick.

Sounds like air in the lines to me as well. I can't say if the Tacoma has this issue. But some cars and trucks must be hooked up to a computer and have the ABS system run to remove air from the ABS unit. Sounds like Johnny lugnut worked on your truck. Sorry.

I know brakes are very important on any vehicle, but if you have the ability to put a lift on by yourself then you could certainly replace your brake pads the next time they need to be done. Look up a how-to on it, it's very easy. Did they use all OEM parts when they were guessing what it was to fix it? If not I would be pissed at all the aftermarket parts they just put on your truck.
