Brake noise issue

I recently replace the hubs on my truck and now the rotors wont seat. When I hit the brakes they shift back and forth against the lugs making a cracking/popping noise. Its been almost a month now and its driving me crazy.

I though there might be some grease between the hub and rotor so I cleaned them up but no change. Im also at 90 ft/lbs on the lugs.

Has anyone had this problem? If so how did you fix it?

 

When you say that the rotors do not seat... Do you mean that they aren't going all the way onto the hub ring?

If you have the lugs torqued to 90 ft lbs and the rotors are not seating you either have the wrong rotor or the wrong hubs.

 

Im pretty sure they're the right hubs and the rotors are the ones I had on the truck before the problem. Im the original owner.

When I pulled the tire and went to spin the rotor I noticed it moved back and forth on the hub. Normally its stuck there and I need to use a hammer to lossen it for removal.

 

Is it possible that it's the common brake pad shifting in the caliper and not the hub moving? The noise from this I would describe as a clicking sound present at low speed present only after initial braking after switching directions. I would mount the wheels and torque as you've been doing, then take some bright finger nail polish and make a small index mark on the hub of the wheel and brake rotor and look for any movement.

 

I suppose its possible. The rotor having play was just the first thing I noticed.

Now Im starting to second guess my install. I plan on going over everything this weekend cause it seems to be getting worse.

 

With the wheel removed and no lug nuts holding the rotor the slop in the holes is normal.

Once you install the wheel and lug nuts it isn't moving.

 

Idea I just thought of, may or may not work. to test if your rotor has play, pull the tire off, get some larger nuts(larger then the lugs and studs) use them as spacers, put the lugs on, yank on the rotor.... go from there?

Idk, seems like an easy place to start

 

So I pulled it apart and double checked everything. The only other thing I found was that the pads had about 1-2cm of play. So I took out the TRD pads and put in regular OEM. So far the noise is gone. Who knew such little play would make so much noise.
